DEKALB, Ill. - South Dakota State volleyball opened the 2022 season with a split on day one of the Huskie Invitational Friday. The Jackrabbits dropped the opening match against Illinois-Chicago, 3-2, before sweeping host Northern Illinois in the nightcap.
SDSU vs. UIC - L, 2-3 (19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 10-15)
Crystal Burk put together the 39th double-double of her career in the opening match, notching a team-high 17 kills to go with 11 digs.
Katie Van Egdom added six kills and 13 digs in her SDSU debut while
Ella Thompson and
Elyse Winter had five kills each.
Raegen Reilly also had a double-double, giving out 26 assists and tallying 26 digs in her first match as a Jackrabbit. Winter and
Sydney Andrews took part in five blocks apiece.
After SDSU tied set one at 10-all with a 4-0 run, UIC put up five straight points to regain the lead. The Jacks managed to come back within two later in the set but fell 25-19.
The Jacks controlled set two early with a 13-6 lead behind two kills each by Burk and Winter. UIC clawed back to trail by only two at 22-20 but the Jacks closed the set out with three straight points.
SDSU hit .412 in set three, paced by six kills on seven swings from Burk. SDSU raced out to a 5-1 advantage and kept the Flames at bay the rest of the set for the 25-20 win.
State's offense struggled again in sets four and five as the squad was held to five kills in both games. UIC won set four 25-15 and set five 15-10. Martina Delucchi had 21 kills for the Flames to lead all players.
SDSU vs. NIU - W, 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 28-26)
The Jackrabbits battled through two extra-point sets to sweep Northern Illinois in the second match of the day.
The Jackrabbits claimed the first set, 25-20.
Anna Nerad put down two service aces during a 9-2 SDSU run and Thompson hit .714 in the set with five kills and no errors on seven attacks.
Following a 5-0 start to set two by the Huskies, SDSU used a 6-1 stretch to lead 8-7. The sides traded points until the Huskies notched five straight to go back up 19-16. The Jacks responded with five straight points of their own, highlighted by an ace from Thompson. Down 23-24, the Jacks scored the final three points of the set for the 26-24 win.
Set three was another back-and-forth affair that featured 15 ties and ended in a 28-26 SDSU win. The Huskies looked to force set four with a 25-24 lead but committed a serving error and gave up an ace to give the Jacks a 26-25 advantage. After NIU tied the set against at 26, a Huskie error and Jackrabbit kill ended the match in favor of the Jackrabbits.
Burk recorded another double-double, the 40th of her career, with 20 digs and 13 kills, both team highs. Thompson added nine kills at a .333 clip.
Anna Nerad and freshman
Masa Scheierman chipped in eight kills each. Nerad also had two ace serves.
Like Burk, Reilly again put together a double-double. She dished 33 assists and collected 11 digs. She also had four kills. Libero
Jadyn Makovicka had 16 digs and three assists. Scheierman and Andrews took part in four blocks.

The Jackrabbits return to the floor Saturday at noon to take on New Jersey Institute of Technology in the final match of the weekend.
