South Dakota State opens the 2022 season with three matches at the Huskie Invitational in DeKalb, Illinois Friday and Saturday. The Jacks return five starters the the 2021 team that went 19-12 overall, including all-Summit first team pick Crystal Burk. A blend of experienced returners and talented newcomers could be the perfect recipe for another strong season for the Jackrabbits.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State enters the 2022 season coming off a 19-12 2021 year that included the Jackrabbits' first trip to the Summit League Tournament since 2010.
- Five starters from 2021 return to the squad in 2022, including fifth-year seniors Crystal Burk and Sydney Andrews.
- The Jackrabbits were picked to finish fifth in the Summit League's Preseason Coaches' Poll. Crystal Burk and Raegen Reilly were tabbed players to watch.
- Two returners earned all-Summit recognition a season ago. Crystal Burk was named to the All-Summit League First Team while Ella Thompson was a member of the league's All-Freshman Team.
- Thompson notched 106 blocks with .95 blocks per set in 2021. Both marks rank fifth in the rally scoring era for SDSU.
- Burk led the Jackrabbits with 442 kills last season, ranking second for SDSU in the squad's Division I era. She was second on the team in digs with 312.
- Returning setter Carly Wedel is joined by Sioux Falls native and North Dakota State transfer Raegen Reilly. Wedel (843) and Reilly (788) ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, on the Summit League's total assists chart last year.
- SDSU made several changes to the program's top-five lists in 2021, including new single-season bests in aces (176), aces per set (1.5) and total points (1,907).
- SDSU's 19 wins last season was the most since 2011. The Jackrabbits started the year 8-3, the best start since 2012.
