BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State plays its home opener on Sunday as the Jackrabbits host Bemidji State at 1 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jacks are slated to host 10 games in Brookings during the 2022 season with eight of their next nine matches taking place at home. SDSU is coming off a three-game road swing in Arizona in which it went 2-0-1, while Bemidji State will be competing in its season opener.
Â
The Jackrabbits began the season against three tough opponents as SDSU trekked to Arizona to begin the 2022 campaign. Weather delays plagued their opening two matches, but the Jacks came away with a 1-1 tie versus Arizona State (Aug. 18) and 1-0 victory over Grand Canyon (Aug. 21). A slow start nearly doomed SDSU in Flagstaff as the Lumberjacks took a 2-0 lead at the half. The Jacks rallied scoring three goals in the final 30 minutes of play to escape with a 3-2 win, including an 84th minute goal by Hansen.
Â
Hansen became the program record holder in game-winning goals with 13. She also is now second all-time in points with 76 (Diana Potterveld) and only trails Jennifer Briggs's 94 she recorded from 2000-02.
Â
Hansen and
Avery Murdzek have jumped out as early points leaders for SDSU. The two each have two goals, while Hansen has seven points behind three assists and Murdzek has five with an assist. Joining them with three points on three assists is
Kaycee Manding, while
Kayla Anderson notched a goal at Northern Arizona and
Delaney Grant recorded her first-career assist in the same contest.
Â
Twenty-three players have appeared for SDSU through three games of the 2022 season. Six players have started in each game in Hansen, Manding,
Cece Limongi,
Rachel Preston,
Avery Murdzek and
Laney Murdzek. Preston has played a team-high 245 minutes on SDSU's back line.
Â
The strong start to the season from a record standpoint isn't the Jackrabbits' focus, but the 2-0-1 record is solid through three matches. In the 23rd season of the program, there have been five other years that had similar or better starts to the season than the 2022 squad. The best ever includes last season's 5-0 ledger to open the year, as well as a 4-0-2 opening to the 2021 spring slate and a 4-0 start in 2001.
Â
Bemidji State will make its way to Brookings for its season opener coming off one of its best seasons in the Beavers' history. BSU went 19-2-3 a season ago, advancing to the NSIC Tournament Championship game and qualifying for the NCAA Division II Tournament. BSU is led by 21st year head coach Jim Stone who has recorded a 219-127-34 record in his time in Bemidji. The Beavers return their leading scorer from last year in Sara Wendt (41), All-American Megan Dahl, goalkeeper Alyssa Stumbaugh and all but two starters from 2021.
Â
The match will be streamed on GoJacks.com while live stats are available on GoJacksLive.com. Tickets are available for purchase ahead of time at JackrabbitTickets.com and South Dakota State University students are able to attend the game free of admission with their student ID.Â
