South Dakota State has two matchups slated this week as the Jackrabbits first travel to face Northern Iowa at 4 p.m. Thursday in Cedar Falls, then return home to take on Drake at 6 p.m. on Sunday at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Jackrabbits are off to a 3-0-1 start to the season following their home-opening victory over Bemidji State on Aug. 28. SDSU's matchup at Northern Iowa is its only one on the road in the month of September, with seven home matches taking place from Sept. 4-Oct. 2 beginning against Drake on Sunday.
Â
The Jackrabbits and Panthers are well acquainted with one another having faced off once each year, except for the spring 2021 slate and 2009 season, since 2005. SDSU holds a 10-2-3 all-time series lead and has won the last three over UNI. The Panthers' last win was a 1-0 victory over the Jacks in Cedar Falls in 2017.
Â
The Jackrabbits and Drake Bulldogs squared off every season from 2005-19 with SDSU claiming an 8-6-1 overall record in the series. Drake won the last meeting, 1-0 in 2019, but SDSU went unbeaten from 2013-18 going 5-0-1 versus the Bulldogs in that span.
Â
Maya Hansen and
Avery Murdzek have jumped out as early points leaders for SDSU. Hansen has recorded three goals and three assists for nine points, while Murdzek has five points on two goals and an assist. The Manding sisters have three assists apiece.
Â
Hansen became the program record holder in game-winning goals at NAU and is now up to 14 in her career, with her two this year ranked third in DI soccer. She also is now second all-time in points with 78 and only trails Jennifer Briggs's 94 she recorded from 2000-02.
Â
Twenty-six players have played for SDSU this season and multiple on the back row have been mainstays on the pitch.
Rachel Preston leads the squad with 308 minutes played and is followed by
Kaycee Manding (293), the reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week. Midfielder
Katherine Jones is third in minutes played (272) and defender
Hayley Lindaman is sixth at 253 minutes.
