JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - South Dakota State volleyball (6-3) picked up a 3-1 win over Nicholls State (3-6) Saturday in the Jacks' final match of the Gamecock Classic. The Jackrabbits lost set one, 25-20, but came back to win the next three, 25-18, 25-18, 25-8.
A trio of Jackrabbits finished with double-digit kills, let by 13 from
Crystal Burk and 12 more apiece from
Akeela Jefferson and
Ella Thompson.
Anna Nerad provided seven kills at a .462 clip. The Jackrabbits hit .270 as a team and held the Colonels to a .157 attack rate.
Raegen Reilly notched three of the Jackrabbits' six service aces to go with her 37 assists and 13 digs.
Carly Wedel added 13 helpers. The SDSU defense was led by libero
Faith Saewert, who tallied a team-high 14 digs, and Burk had 13 for the Jacks. Thompson and
Sydney Andrews had four blocks apiece.
Katie Jones led Nicholls State with 10 kills while Katie Becnel had 10 digs.
Nicholls State led for the majority of the first set and used a 5-1 run to push its way out to a 15-9 advantage. The Jackrabbits looked to rally late, stringing together a five-point run that included two kills by Jefferson to trail by just two at 20-18, before the Colonels finished the set off.
The Jacks scored four straight points in the second set - with two kills apiece by Jefferson and Thompson - to lead 12-7. Thompson also tallied the next to SDSU kills for the 14-9 lead.
Crystal Burk put down a kill for the Jacks' set point and SDSU won on an attack error by the Colonels.
Raegen Reilly helped the Jackrabbits out to a 5-0 lead in set three with a pair of aces but the Colonels came back to lead the game at 8-7. Down 11-10, Reilly sparked another 5-0 run from the serving line to go back up 15-11. The Jackrabbits ended set three with yet another five-point stretch for the 25-18 win.
SDSU raced out to a 7-1 lead in the final set and never looked back. Already leading 14-7, the Jacks used an 11-1 run to finish off the match.
NOTES
- Crystal Burk has recorded at least 10 kills in all nine matches this season. She has seven double-doubles.
- This was the Jackrabbits' first four-set match of the season.
UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits will travel to Iowa City next weekend for the Hawkeye Invitational. SDSU takes on Iowa and Northern Iowa Friday and wraps up the nonconference season with North Florida Saturday.
