JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - South Dakota State volleyball's
Sydney Andrews had a career day on the court as the Jackrabbits went 1-1 Friday at the Gamecock Classic. The Jackrabbits (5-3) opened the day with a five-set win over Samford (3-5) before falling to Jacksonville State (8-0) 3-0 in the nightcap.
Set scores against Samford went 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12. Set scores against Jacksonville State went 25-14, 25-23, 25-20.
Andrews put together two of the best hitting performances of her career, hitting.567 across both matches. The fifth-year senior tallied 14 kills, a career high, with two errors on 21 swings for a .571 attack rate against Samford, then had six kills and one error on nine attacks for a .556 clip against Jacksonville State. The percentages rank first and second in her career when recording at least four kills. Andrews also notched 10 blocks on the day, 1.25 per set, to lead the team.
SDSU's first match saw the team play its fourth five-setter in as many contests. Down 7-1 to the Bulldogs early on, SDSU steadily pushed its way back into the set and trailed by only three at 14-11. Later, an 8-0 run sparked by back-to-back kills from
Akeela Jefferson gave the Jackrabbits their first lead of the set at 23-21. The Bulldogs tied the set at 24-all and then
Ella Thompson and
Crystal Burk ended the set with a kill apiece.
Samford jumped out again in the second set, leading 8-3 early on. The Jackrabbits made a late push to cut the deficit to two but could not repeat set one's rally. Set three was much closer, featuring 13 ties and six lead changes. Neither side led by more than two before a 6-1 Bulldog run gave them a 17-13 lead. A six-point run with Thompson at the serving line put the Jacks back up 18-17. The sides traded points until Samford finished the set off and took a 2-1 match lead.
Set four was also tightly contested with nine ties and no lead greater than two until a 17-14 SDSU lead at the midway point. The final tie came at 18-all and the race to the finish ended in favor of the Jacks on an Andrews kill. A four-point stretch late in set five gave SDSU an 11-7 advantage. The Jacks held off the Bulldogs from there and ended the match with a kill from Burk.
Andrews was one of four Jackrabbits with double-digit kills. Her 14 kills were followed by 13 from Jefferson, 11 from Burk and 10 from Thompson.
Raegen Reilly gave out 48 assists and Burk had 12 digs, both team highs.
Elyse Winter contributed dour blocks while Jefferson and Thompson added three apiece.
In the loss to Jacksonville State, Burk had 12 kills to lead all players. Thompson chipped in seven. Reilly had 34 assists and
Katie Van Egdom had seven digs in her first start at libero.

- The Jackrabbits are 3-2 in five-set matches this season and 2-1 in sweeps.
- Seven SDSU games have gone into extra points this year.
- Akeela Jefferson's 13 kills against Samford is a season high
- Crystal Burk has notched at least 10 kills in all seven matches this season. She has six double-doubles on the year.
