BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State volleyball team picked up a five-set win over Summit League-leader Kansas City Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-18, dropped the next two 25-15 and 25-23, then bested the Roos with a 15-11 win in the tiebreak game.
SDSU moves to 6-16 overall, 4-6 in Summit League action and 2-3 at Frost Arena this season. Kansas City is 16-5 on the year and 7-2 in conference matches.
Masa Scheierman put together one of her most complete games of the season. The sophomore tallied seven service aces in the win, setting a new program record for a five-set match, to go with eight kills, four digs and three blocks.
Sylvie Zgonc notched 22 kills, including the game winner, at a .370 clip. She also tallied 18 digs.
Katie Van Egdom added 18 kills and 10 digs.
Rylee Martin gave out 27 assists while
Raegen Reilly dished 26 helpers. The duo recorded one kill each. Reilly also had seven digs and an ace.
Stella Winterfeld posted 22 digs to pace the defense. Scheierman's three blocks was a team-high, followed by two each from
Sydni Schetnan and
Elyse Winter.
Kaia Dunford's 14 kills led the Roos. Kansas City had four players in double figures.
Set one: Scheierman notched consecutive aces to put the Jackrabbits ahead 4-3 in the opening set. The Roos came back to tie it at 5-5 and then against at 8-8. SDSU scored five of the next six to go up 13-9 with two kills apiece by Zgonc and Van Egdom. Three KC errors pushed the Jackrabbit lead to 17-10. Scheierman put down a kill and then another ace on back-to-back rallied to make it 19-12. Schetnan had the last two kills for SDSU for the 25-16 win.
Set two: Kansas City opened up a 5-1 run but the Jacks came back to tie it at five-all during a run that included yet another Scheierman ace. The set featured five more ties, the last of which came at 13-13. Scheierman went to the service line and tallied three more aces during a seven-point run that put SDSU ahead 19-13. The sides traded points until a Van Egdom kill and Winter and Scheierman block won it, 25-18.
Set three: The Jackrabbits led 12-11 before a 5-0 run put the Roos ahead. Kansas City ended the set with eight straight points.
Set four: The fourth set was tight throughout and neither side led by more than one until a 3-0 stretch put KC up 13-10. A KC error and then a
Faith Saewert ace brought the Jacks back within one, 13-12, then Van Egdom tied it at 14 with a kill. KC put away four of the next five to go up and held onto the lead.
Set five: KC opened with the first two points but the Jackrabbits worked their way back to tie the fifth at 5-5 on a Van Egdom kill, then took the lead on a Rao attack error. Schetnan put down a kill that gave the Jackrabbits the 8-6 lead at the side change. Tied at 10, SDSU tallied five of the final six points. Zgonc recorded a kill, then Winterfeld had an ace that forced a KC timeout at 12-10. Zgonc's game winner found the floor for the 15-11 victory.
