South Dakota State and Denver are slated to meet at 8 p.m. CT on Thursday at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. The two teams, which were projected to finish in the top two of The Summit League standings in the preseason Coaches' Poll, currently sit in the top two slots of the conference table through three matches. The Jackrabbits are 3-0 in their first three contests and have nine points, while Denver narrowly trails with seven points and a 2-0-1 record in league action.
Â
The Jackrabbits hold the all-time series lead of 7-3-4 over the Pioneers, but the two sides have played to even terms of late. Since 2019, the foes have battled to a 2-2-3 mark against one another. A season ago, the Jacks and Pios played to a scoreless tie in Brookings. In 2021, SDSU fell to Denver in the regular season finale (2-0), but bounced back in the postseason. The Jackrabbits went on to win the conference tournament title on Nov. 6 that year, 4-2, over the Pioneers in Denver.
Â
SDSU extended its undefeated start to conference play this past week behind a 1-0 victory over North Dakota State and 3-1 win against North Dakota.
Jadenn Carrillo was the lone scorer in the Jackrabbit win over the Bison. The Jacks were boosted by a first-career goal for
Kaycee Manding, first goal of the season by
Laney Murdzek and third goal of the year by freshman
Katelyn Beulke in the victory over the Fighting Hawks.
Â
South Dakota State has now won the last six meetings against NDSU. The Jackrabbits have also earned seven straight victories over UND.
Â
The Jacks ended their non-conference slate with a 7-2 record following a 1-0 loss to Creighton on Sept. 15. They opened Summit League action by earning a 1-0 'Interstate Series' victory over South Dakota on Sept. 24. The Jackrabbits outshot the Coyotes 19-3 and benefitted from a 20th minute goal by
Katelyn Beulke. The win for SDSU was the program's first in Vermillion since 2014.
The Jackrabbits are the first team in The Summit League to reach double-digit wins with their 10-2 overall record, improving on an improving run the program is on. SDSU has now recorded at least 10 wins for 11 consecutive seasons. The Jacks are one of 10 women's soccer programs with double-digit victories so far this season.
Â
Defensive effort has been a key to the Jackrabbits' success in 2023. SDSU has outshot its opponent in every win, with their overall goal differential of +21 this season ranking 19th nationally. The Jacks' goals-against average of 0.667, while giving up more than one goal in just one match this year, ranks at the top of the conference and 33rd in the country.
Â
Upperclassmen have played a major role in SDSU's stellar play. Manding (1009),
Reagan Anderson (899),
Hayley Lindaman (873) and
Katherine Jones (817) have been standouts for the Jackrabbit back four that pace the team's minutes played along with
Avery Murdzek (877).
