BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State volleyball fell in four sets to Omaha Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena.
Katie Van Egdom posted a career-best 22 kills to lead all players.
The Jackrabbits dropped the first and second sets 25-22 and 25-17 before rebounding with a 25-20 win in the third. SDSU trailed 23-14 in the final set but came all the way back to within one at 24-23 before the Mavericks finished the match.
Van Egdom's 22 kills came on 53 total attacks with only one error for a .396 clip. She also tallied 11 digs for the Jacks and took part in one block. Van Egdom had nine kills in the opening set alone and seven in set four.
The Jackrabbits hit .264 as a team, their fourth-best percentage of the season, while the Mavericks registered a .284 attack rate. Omaha had a slight edge in kills (60-58), aces (6-4) and blocks (5-4).
Sylvie Zgonc and
Sydni Schetnan added 10 kills apiece. Zgonc also had nine digs and three assists. Schetnan took part in two blocks and had two digs.
Elyse Winter posted seven kills and no errors on 19 swings to go with two blocks and two digs.
McKenna Moehrle chipped in five kills on seven attacks.
Rylee Martin set a new career high with 28 assists. She also contributed five digs and had a solo block in the opening set.
Raegen Reilly had 14 assists, 14 digs and an ace serve.
Stella Winterfeld also tallied 14 digs and gave out three assists. The libero put down two ace serves and managed a kill during the third set.
Akeela Jefferson made her first appearance of the season as a serving sub for the Jackrabbits. She recorded an ace during third set and notched a pair of digs.
Omaha had four players with double-digit kills - Amanda Hardt (13), McKenna Ruch (12), Shayla McCormick (11) and Rachel Fairbanks (10).
Set one: A six-point run in the opening set gave the Jackrabbits a 16-14 lead over the Mavs. Omaha came back to tie the set at 16, then again at 20 and 21. SDSU led 22-21 before Omaha ended the set with a 4-0 stretch.
Set two: Omaha led 17-10 in the second set, then traded points with the Jacks until 21-15. The Mavericks scored four of the final six points to take the 2-0 match lead.
Set three: SDSU went up 4-0 with kills from Martin and Winter, plus a Winterfeld ace and Omaha error. The Mavericks pulled back even with a 4-0 run of their own. Six consecutive Omaha errors pushed the Jacks' lead back to 10-4, but the Mavs responded with another run to lead 11-10. Schetnan put down back-to-back kills, followed by a Zgonc kill and Jefferson ace, putting SDSU ahead against at 15-11. UNO rallied once again and led 17-16. Schetnan and Moehrle tied the set at 17 with a block, sparking a 4-0 stretch to lead 20-17. Later, Van Egdom and Winter posted a big block to make it 24-19 and Van Egdom forced the fourth set with a kill to win it, 25-20.
Set four: With the Jackrabbits up 7-6 in the fourth, UNO went on an 11-1 run to lead 17-8. Omaha led 23-14 before the Jacks started to claw their way back. Zgonc put down a pair of kills and Reilly tallied an ace during a six-point run to make it 23-20, then Zgonc and Van Egdom notched kills during a 3-0 stretch to make it 24-23. Following an unsuccessful Omaha challenge, UNO put down a kill to take the match.
