BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State gets another opportunity to play at Fishback Soccer Park on Sunday as the Jackrabbits host Omaha in the 2023 Summit League Women's Soccer Championship match. The Jacks and Mavericks are slated to face off in Brookings at 1 p.m.
Â
The Jackrabbits advanced to the championship game behind a 5-2 victory over Oral Roberts in the Summit League semifinals this past Sunday. Five different players recorded goals for SDSU, while
Birna Bjornsdottir had two of the Jackrabbits' five assists, in a win that saw SDSU score five unanswered goals. South Dakota State's goal total was its most ever in a Summit League tournament appearance.Â
Â
SDSU gained the ability to host The Summit League Championship match when Omaha upset top seed Denver in the semifinals. Following a 2-0 win against South Dakota on Oct. 27 in Denver, the Mavs got out to a 1-0 lead over the Pioneers in their Oct. 29 meeting and held a 2-1 edge following a 48th minute goal. Denver scored a 90th minute goal to send the contest to overtime. After two scoreless periods, Omaha eventually earned the win behind a 3-2 score in penalty kicks.
Â
Omaha returns to Brookings for a third time this season. The Mavericks and Jackrabbits' first meeting was originally scheduled for Oct. 12, but was postponed due to weather and unplayable field conditions. The two sides then faced off in a regular season finale on Oct. 24.
Katherine Jones scored a 43rd minute goal, while Omaha's Alyssa Kellar equalized in the 66th, and the two sides completed a 1-1 draw.Â
Â
The Jacks and Mavs have plenty of recent postseason history. Omaha holds a 2-1 record in the postseason all-time against SDSU. A season ago, the Mavs beat the Jackrabbits 1-0 in the semifinals in Brookings on their way to earning the Summit League title. In 2021, SDSU scored a late second overtime goal in a 1-0 semifinal victory over Omaha in Denver, a championship which the Jacks eventually won 4-2 over the Pios. As the top seed and Summit League regular season champion in 2018, SDSU was upset in the semifinals by Omaha by a 3-1 score at Fishback Soccer Park.
Â
South Dakota State makes its eighth appearance in The Summit League Championship match. The Jacks own a 3-1-3 mark and have won six conference tournament titles with three coming by penalty kicks. It's SDSU's sixth championship game showing in the past decade.
Â
The Mavs will play in their third title game in the previous four seasons. Omaha is 1-2 in The Summit League Championship under head coach Tim Walters. Last year, The Mavs claimed their first Summit League title by topping Oral Roberts in a shootout.Â
