South Dakota State opens the 2023-24 season with Arkansas State Monday night at Frost Arena. This is the fourth consecutive season the Jackrabbits have played their season opener at home in Frost.
This is the third all-time meeting between these teams and the first since the 2007-08 season.
SDSU ended the 2022-23 season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 12-point loss to No. 1 Virginia Tech, who went on to the Final Four. The Jacks were 29-6 overall. Arkansas State went 13-19 a year ago and ended its season in the third round of the Sun Belt postseason tournament.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State returns 10 players from last season's March Madness team and adds two newcomers in Hilary Behrens and Jenna Hopp.
- The Jacks graduated four after the 2022-23 season, including Summit League Player of the Year Myah Selland and Paiton Burckhard, an all-Summit second-team honoree a year ago.
- State was picked to win the Summit League regular season in the conference's preseason poll with 27 first-place votes.
- SDSU's Paige Meyer and Tori Nelson were named to the Summit League's preseason first and second teams, respectively.
- Meyer, a two-time Summit League second team honoree, averaged 10.5 points, 3.2 assists and 1.3 steals last season. She shot 54.5 percent from the floor and 48.8 percent from the beyond the arc, both of which were team bests. Her 2.0 assist/turnover ratio ranked second in the Summit League.
- Nelson returns for her fifth and final season at SDSU. The 2019-20 Summit League Freshman of the Year has started every game for SDSU over the last two seasons and has accumulated the most minutes played of any Jackrabbit in that stretch. She scored 7.9 points and grabbed 3.4 rebounds per contest in 2022-23 and blocked 33 total shots.
- South Dakota State is receiving votes in the USA Today/WBCA Preseason Top 25.
- Three opponents on SDSU's schedule are ranked in the preseason AP and/or USA Today polls - No. 6/4 South Carolina and No. 22/23 Creighton and No. 24/RV Washington State. Gonzaga is receiving votes in both polls.
- With two Summit League titles in 2023, the Jackrabbits' Summit League championship count is now 19 trophies in 16 years in the conference.
- SDSU has won 13 consecutive games at home in Frost Arena, the 11th-longest active streak in the country.
