BROOKINGS, SD – South Dakota State track and field opened its indoor season with the SDSU Holiday Open and Multi on Friday and the squads each sit in second place after the first day of competition.
Multiple new Jackrabbits also got to make their debuts in the yellow and blue in several events at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
Action kicked off with the multi events, where
Robyn Dayton finished 13
th in the pentathlon with 2703 points.
Milee Young represented SDSU in the finals of both the weight throw (6
th, 54-09.25) and shot put (7
th, 42-09.75)
In the triple jump,
Apryl Adderley made her Jackrabbit debut with a fifth-place finish and a mark of 37-01.00 as
Camryn Brinkman (36-11.00) took seventh.
Layne Kirkendoll (17-01.25) and Adderley (17-00.75) finished back-to-back in the finals of the long jump, taking fifth and sixth, respectively.
Madison Kizer tied for second in the high jump with a 5-04.25 as Kirkendoll (5-04.25) tied for fourth and
Taylor Jochum and
Hadley Carlson tied for eighth (5-02.25).
In her Jackrabbit debut,
Laci Leverty tied for seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 11-00.00.
Savannah Risseeuw took third in 8.63 and
Katelyn Darnell was sixth in 9.18 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles.
In the 60-meter dash finals,
Brielle Dixon and
Jenna Johnson went back-to-back as they claimed sixth (7.78) and seventh (7.79, PR), respectively.
Rich-Ann Archer won the 200-meter dash with a clocking of 25.06 while
Maggie Madsen made her SDSU debut with a 25.45 for second place.
The Jackrabbits had a huge showing in the women's 300-meter dash, led by
Cerington Jones's school-record time of 38.78. Johnson ran a PR of 39.94 for the third fastest time on record and second place as
Jessica Boekelheide claimed fifth in her event debut with a 40.64 for the sixth fastest mark on record.
Emily Rystrom (40.86, PR, eighth all-time) took sixth,
Erika Kuntz (40.90, PR, ninth all-time) was seventh and Abby Hughes (42.65) finished 13
th.
SDSU went 1-2-3 in the 800-meter run, with
Harley Fischer in first (2:20.18),
Hannah Spoden in second (2:20.58) and
Laura Bogue in third (2:21.36).
The 4x400-meter relay team of Johnson, Kuntz, Rystrom and Jones ran a 3:47.05 for second place and the third fastest time at SDSU. The squad of Boekelheide, Madsen, Risseeuw and Hughes finished third with a clocking of 3:57.73.
South Dakota State currently sits in second place with 121 points as South Dakota holds first with 156.50 points and Augustana has third with 50 points.
On the men's side of competition,
Pierre Lear picked up where he left off last season as he was crowned champion of the 60-meter hurdles with a clocking a 7.94.
Four Jacks qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash as
Drew Olson (6.83, PR) was second,
Evan Henderson (6.87) came third,
Jake Werner (6.91) finished fourth and
Carter Toews (6.93, event debut) took sixth.
Five Jackrabbits placed in the top 10 of the men's 200-meter dash as Toews took fifth in 22.25 and Henderson was sixth in 22.26.
Hudson Schroeder clocked a 22.60 for seventh and
Caden Plasier ran a PR of 22.86 for 10
th.
Werner ran a personal-best 34.45 for second place and the second fastest time on record for the 300-meter dash as
Kudra Nzibariza finished third in 35.30 for a PR and ninth all-time.
Gunnar Gunderson also finished in the top 10 with a fifth-place showing of 35.52 in his SDSU debut.
Thailan Hallman finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.71 as
Reggie Slaba ran a 49.00 for fourth and
Jeremiah Donahoe came seventh in 50.18.
Freshman
Sean Murphy clocked a 1:55.15 in the 800-meter run for seventh place as
Andrew Moeller (1:56.88) took ninth and
Sam Castle (1:57.10) finished tenth.
Brandon Kampsen won the mile run in his Jackrabbit debut with a 4:12.45 as teammate
Tyler O'Neill finished ninth in 4:32.44.
Nathan Notgrass took third overall in the men's 3000-meter run with a PR time of 8:33.37, shaving over 26 seconds off his previous best.
Three men's 4x400-meter relay teams competed in the event, led by the team of Hallman, Nzibariza, Slaba and Lear who took second in 3:20.83.
Castle, Kampsen, Murphy and Moeller ran a 3:25.07 for fourth as
Jeremiah Donahoe, Gunderson, Werner and
Aiden Voss finished seventh in 3:26.64.
Tristen Hanna qualified for the triple jumps finals and won the event with a 47-10.75 for a new indoor personal best and eighth on the SDSU all-time list.
Schroeder took sixth with a 22-01.50 and
Isaac Flanegan claimed ninth with a 21-02.75 in the long jump finals of their first collegiate meet.
Connor Powers cleared an indoor PR of 6-06.75 for seventh in the high jump as
Carson Kirwan (6-02.75, SDSU debut) took ninth and
Ryan Benson (6-02.75, PR) was 11
th.
In the men's pole vault,
Jaden Peters tied for third with a mark of 15-11.00 as
Matt Katz cleared 15-05.00 for fourth.
Caiden Fredrick and
Lee Reiser each qualified for the shot put finals and finished fourth (53-06.50) and sixth (52-02.50), respectively, in their first meet as Jackrabbits.
Three Jackrabbits competed in the finals of the weight throw, led by
Hunter Wallster, who finished second with a mark of 60-11.25.
Ethan Fischer took fourth with a personal best of 58-10.75 and Fredrick was eighth with a throw of 53-09.25.
The SDSU men are second with 130 points as South Dakota sits in first with 142 points and Dordt holds third with 73.50.
Action will resume tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the discus and remaining events of the men's heptathlon.
