BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State plays its final non-conference home game of the 2023 portion of its schedule on Thursday when the Jackrabbits take on Mayville State in Frost Arena. Tip-off between the Jacks and Comets is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Â
SDSU and Mayville State meets for their 14th matchup in the all-time series. The Jackrabbits own a 13-0 record which dates back to the 1950s when both programs competed at the NAIA level.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits are 5-5 overall heading into the contest in Brookings. The Comets are 10-2 overall and have a common exhibition opponent of SDSU's in the University of Mary, which Mayville State fell to in Bismarck on Nov. 15, 81-72.Â
Â
Mayville State is coming off a 25-6 season that saw the Comets claim both their conference regular season and tournament titles en route to an NAIA national tournament appearance.Â
Â
South Dakota State returned to Brookings following a 79-69 victory over Wichita State at INTRUST Bank Arena in downtown Wichita on Saturday. The Jackrabbits topped the now 7-3 Shockers for the first time in the two sides' fourth all-time meeting.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits were led in scoring in the contest by
Zeke Mayo and
Kalen Garry. Mayo scored a game-high 25 points to go along with a season-high seven assists. His 20-point effort was his fifth of the season and 14th of his college career. Garry scored a career-high 22 points by going 8 of 12 from the field. His point total was the most by a freshman since Feb. 2 of the 2022-23 slate when
Matthew Mors registered 23 in a home victory over North Dakota.Â
Â
The win over the Shockers proved to be one of the Jackrabbits' top performances in multiple facets as a team yet this year. SDSU recorded season highs in three-pointers made (12), assists (15) and free throw percentage (84.6%) in the contest. Defensively, the Jacks held the Shockers to their lowest field goal percentage of the season (31.4%).Â
