BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State makes its conference debut on Sunday when the Jackrabbits host North Dakota in Frost Arena at 2 p.m. The Jacks will be taking part in their Summit League opening contest of the 2023-24 season, while the Fighting Hawks began league play on Friday by losing at home to St. Thomas, 70-45.
SDSU returns to action after a 10-day break following its appearance at the Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso, Texas. The Jackrabbits fell in both of their matchups at the multi-team event, dropping contests to Wyoming (78-65) and Norfolk State (84-65).
The Jacks will try to bounce back following two of its toughest showings offensively this season. The defeats at the event held on the UTEP campus saw SDSU produce two of its three worst outputs in scoring as well as field goal percentage. The Jackrabbits' rebound totals in both were their worst of the season.
South Dakota State welcomes an opponent in North Dakota the Jackrabbit program has had success against in recent history. While the Fighting Hawks hold a 104-94 edge in the all-time series, the Jackrabbits have won 15 straight matchups versus UND. SDSU has earned victories in 19 of the last 20 meetings going back to the 2003-04 slate.
Four players are averaging double digits scoring for the Jackrabbits through 13 games this season.
Zeke Mayo (17.0) leads the way while he's followed by
Charlie Easley (11.8),
William Kyle III (11.2) and
Luke Appel (10.5).
Kalen Garry is averaging 9.8 points per game through his first 13 college contests. Mayo continues to pace SDSU in rebounding (6.2) and assists (2.8), a feat he also managed a season ago.
North Dakota enters Sunday's contest at 8-6 overall following their league-opening matchup Friday. B.J. Omot, who was a Preseason Second Team All-Summit League choice, leads the Fighting Hawks averaging 16.1 points.
Following the New Year's Eve matchup, SDSU takes part in the Big Sky-Summit Challenge. The Jacks face Weber State in Ogden, Utah, on Wednesday. The Jackrabbits will host Montana State as part of the Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 6.
