MINNEAPOLIS — South Dakota State established two new school records in men's relay events Wednesday on the opening day of the 2023 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
In the first event of the meet, the Jackrabbit quartet of Rafael Negri, Austin Smith, Luke Nichols and Eric Anderson shattered the school record with a time of 1 minute, 28.72 seconds en route to a fifth-place finish in the event. That time shaved 1.40 seconds off the previous record of 1:30.12 set in 2016 by Dan Jacobson, Pierce Oja, Garth Wadsworth and Ben Bolinske.
To close out the evening session, the Jackrabbits recorded a fourth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay in record-setting fashion. The foursome of Denilson Cyprianos, Alex Kraft, Jon Galles and Sam Johnson clocked a time of 6:38.30 to trim more than two and a half seconds off another SDSU record set seven years ago.
The previous 800 freestyle relay of 6:40.98 was held by Jacobson, Matt Carpenter, Chris Rumrill and Bolinske.
SDSU stands in fifth place in the team standings after Wednesday's two relay events with 58 points. League newcomer Lindenwood leads with 74 points, followed by defending champion Denver with 70.
