CONWAY, Ark. – South Dakota State earned a split in its opening two games at the Michelle Short Memorial Classic on Saturday as the Jackrabbit softball team beat Mississippi Valley State in five innings by an 11-0 score, then lost an 8-6 decision to Missouri State at Central Arkansas' Farris Field.

Game 1 (vs. Mississippi Valley State)
Shannon Lasey allowed just two hits and the Jackrabbit lineup smacked four home runs en route to the run-rule victory over the Devilettes.Â

The Jacks nearly blew the game open in the first inning after loading the bases. However, MVSU kept SDSU off the board. The Devilettes hit a single in the bottom half of the inning but didn't advance beyond there.Â

SDSU began its onslaught offensively in the second.
Mia Jarecki hit a three-run home run and
Rozelyn Carrillo drilled a solo shot to make it a 4-0 game. After a scoreless third, SDSU plated three more runs in the fourth.
Emma Osmundson hit an RBI single,
Rozelyn Carrillo connected on an RBI double and
Cheyanne Masterson hit a sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 7-0.Â

Lasey continued her dominance in the circle to keep MVSU off the board. SDSU came to bat in the top of the fifth which saw
Jocelyn Carrillo hit a three-run home run and
Mia Jarecki go back-to-back with a solo shot to make it 11-0.Â

Lasey allowed another single in the fifth but that would be it for MVSU. Lasey improved to 4-1 as she pitched five innings of two-hit ball. She struck out 11 Devilettes and walked just one batter. Jarecki, Osmundson and
Rozelyn Carrillo each recorded two hits for the Jacks. Jarecki and Culver each scored two runs, while Jarecki had four RBIs and
Jocelyn Carrillo followed with three RBIs.

Game 2 (vs. Missouri State)
South Dakota State rallied from three runs back to take a late lead, but a grand slam in the sixth by Missouri State put the game out of reach as the Bears topped the Jackrabbits 8-6.

An RBI single and two-run double propelled Missouri State into a 4-1 edge in the top of the second. After a scoreless third and top of the fourth for the Bears, SDSU began its comeback.
Jocelyn Carrillo led off the bottom of the fourth with a double. She would jog her way in from there as Osmundson connected on a pitch and sent it over the wall to make it a 4-3 margin.Â

Tori Kniesche kept the Bears off the scoreboard in the fifth. That led to SDSU taking their first lead of the game. After two consecutive outs to open the Jackrabbits' inning at the plate,
Lindsey Culver hit a solo home run to tie it at 4-4.
Jocelyn Carrillo followed her with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Carrillo scored on an RBI triple by Jarecki to put the Jacks ahead 5-4.Â

The Bears came to bat in the top of the sixth and jumped out to a three-run advantage. A walk, single and walk loaded the bases with no outs. Olivia Krehbiel was up next for MSU and hit the four-run blast over the left-center field fence to make it an 8-5 game.Â

Lindsey Culver solo home run in the seventh cut the Bears' lead to two runs, but SDSU was unable to get another runner on base as the contest was closed out.Â

SDSU was led at the plate with Osmundson, Culver and both Carrillos recording two hits. Osmundson, Culver and
Jocelyn Carrillo scored two runs apiece. Kniesche dropped to 5-1 on the season as she gave up eight runs in five innings of work. She struck out seven batters but walked eight.
Alexa Williams came on in relief and pitched two hitless innings in the circle for the Jackrabbits.Â

- South Dakota State is now 9-5 on the season after Saturday's split of matchups.Â
- Tori Kniesche's seven strikeouts thrown in Saturday's game against Missouri State led her to surpass the 500 total in her career. She is the program's all-time record holder in strikeouts.
- Emma Osmundson continues to lead the Jacks at the plate through 14 games. She's hitting .405 on the year while she's followed by Mia Jarecki (.383) and Lindsey Culver (.294).Â
