JACKS COLLECT 11 MEDALS ON DAY ONE

VERMILLION, SD – The South Dakota State University track and field teams garnered a total of 11 medals on day one of the Summit League Indoor Championships while also qualifying 20 athletes to Sunday's event finals at the Mildred J. Hillenbrand Memorial Track.
Hunter Wallster (weight throw) and Joseph Minor-Williams (3,000-meter run) were each crowned Summit League champions in their respective events.
Wallster took first with his personal best mark of 69-09.5, which is now third in school history. Dominick Etherington finished third for the bronze medal in the event with a personal best 63-07.00, now fifth in school history.
Minor-Williams was champion of the 3,000-meter run after clocking a new PR of 8:12.00 that ranks seventh on the SDSU all-time list. Ben Olson then finished third in 8:12.81 for the bronze medal.
Jaiden Boomsma took the first medal for SDSU on the weekend after claiming second place in the long jump with her runner-up mark of 19-06.75. Layne Kirkendoll earned herself a PR with a leap of 17-08.75.
In the final event of the day, Caitlin Bright, Hannah Whitbread, Tori Glazier and Grace Waage teamed up in the women's distance medley relay and took second place in 11:49.61, now the third fastest time in school history.
Matt Katz cleared 16-08.00 for a new personal best, the second best mark in school history and the bronze medal.
Leah Hansen was third across the finish line in the women's 3000-meter run and clocked a 9:50.22 to earn a spot on the awards stand.
Lizzy Gillingham finished in 10th place overall of the pentathlon with a personal best 3344 points, which is tied for sixth in school history.
Catylynn Duff qualified for the women's weight throw and claimed eighth place overall with her personal best mark of 59-11.25, which sits in fifth on the SDSU all-time list.
Following the men's long jump finals, Tre Manning finished in fifth place with his mark of 22-10.00.
SDSU's distance medley relay team of Will Lohr, Reggie Slaba, Eli Salisbury and Carter Knaus narrowly finished in fourth with a time of 10:13.52.
After four scored events of the heptathlon, Ryan Benson sits in eighth place with a total of 2661 points in the tight contest. The remaining multi events will kick off at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.
Additionally, 20 Jackrabbits qualified for Sunday's Summit League Indoor Championship finals.
Jared Wipf, Evan Henderson and Manny Phoulom-Smith are all moving on to the 60-meter dash finals. Henderson ran a PR of 6.83, which puts him in sole possession of fifth place on the all-time list.
Phoulom-Smith also qualified for the final round of the 200-meter dash.
Rich-Ann Archer, Boomsma and Brielle Dixon all qualified for the women's 60-meter dash finals. Archer will also appear in the women's 200-meter dash finals.
Pierre Lear will represent SDSU in tomorrow's 60-meter hurdle finals after clocking a 7.87 while Dixon and Risseeuw will each be competing in the women's 60-meter hurdle finals.
Reid Pierzinski, Thailan Hallman and Slaba are all moving on to the 400-meter dash finals while on the women's side, Cerington Jones, Lauren Van Dyke, Jenna Johnson and Erika Kuntz will all represent SDSU in the final of the 400-meter dash.
Claire Beckman and Tori Glazier will each be moving on to the 800-meter finals tomorrow after clocking a 2:16.51 and 2:17.34, respectively.
After five scored events in the first day of competition, the SDSU women sit in fourth place with 25 points while the men are in first with 54 points.
Competition will resume Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. with the remaining multi events while field events will begin at 11:30 a.m. and running events are set to start at 1 p.m.
