Game Notes |
South Dakota State made a late adjustment to its schedule and now looks ahead to facing a loaded field of teams at the Jayhawk Invitational which begins on Friday. Previously set to play seven games in California in a less-than-a-week span, but with rain expected throughout the duration of the planned visit, the Jackrabbits instead take on Central Arkansas, Stanford and host Kansas at Arrocha Ballpark over a course of three days.
Â
The field consists of four strong teams in the opening NCAA RPI Rankings. Stanford is rated fourth in the nation with its 19-2 record. Central Arkansas is 21st with a 14-5 mark which includes a 7-6 victory over SDSU. The Jayhawks have a matching 12-8 record to the Jacks and are 110th in the RPI trailing SDSU which is at 57th.
Â
South Dakota State has played a competitive opening 20-game schedule which includes its most recent tournament appearance in Oklahoma. The Jacks won by a combined margin of 28-3 in a trio of wins, two against Tarleton State and one versus Tulsa. The Jackrabbits then visited the confines of third-ranked Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls, the top hitting team in the nation heading into two games versus SDSU, were held relatively in check. SDSU was unable to get its bats going against a stellar Oklahoma State rotation and dropped both contests, 4-0 and 6-0.Â
Â
SDSU has been led by its hitters that make up its top two spots consistently in the lineup in
Mia Jarecki and
Emma Osmundson. Jarecki is hitting .369 and Osmundson has a .348 average through 20 games. Jarecki ranks at the top of statistical categories among Summit League players in hits (24), runs per game (1.0) and total bases (43). Osmundson is second on the team with 23 hits.Â
Â
Three other Jacks had big weekends in Oklahoma.
Jocelyn Carrillo improved her season batting average to .264 by going 6-for-13 at the plate. She scored three runs and drove in 3 RBIs.
Alexa Williams went 6 of 16 and hit her first career home run.
Rozelyn Carrillo smashed two home runs and had a team-leading five runs scored and 10 RBIs in the five-game stretch.Â
Â
SDSU's rotation has a combined 3.10 ERA through 20 games.
Tori Kniesche and
Shannon Lasey each sport 6-2 records and have pitched over 50 innings apiece. Williams has served as primarily a reliever for the Jackrabbits and been effective. She currently has a team-leading 1.88 ERA in nine appearances and is sixth in Division I softball with three saves.
