BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State begins its 2023 season with two home matches at Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings. The Jackrabbits take on Manitoba as they make their season debut on their home pitch at 6 p.m. on Thursday. SDSU follows the matchup with a 6 p.m. contest versus Augustana on Saturday.
Â
The Jackrabbits enter the 2023 season after a campaign that saw SDSU finish 13-1-5 and place second in The Summit League standings. SDSU hosted quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the conference tournament, eventually falling to Omaha 1-0 in the semis.
Â
The overall record in 2022 was one of the program's best in its existence. In 23 seasons of play, the winning percentage of .816 ranked second all-time trailing only the spring of 2021's 12-0-5 record (.853 winning percentage). The Jacks were also the last undefeated team in Division I women's soccer with their 13-0-5 record during the regular season.
Â
The Jacks have several athletes that were recognized in 2022 returning in 2023.
Jocelyn Tanner earned repeat honors as The Summit League's Goalkeeper of the Year, while
Maya Hansen claimed the conference's Offensive Player of the Year Award.Â
Â
Maya Hansen is just a goal away from becoming SDSU's all-time scoring leader. Already the Jack- rabbits' points record holder with 96, Hansen currently stands in a tie with Jennifer (Briggs) Cleary with 39 goals. Hansen not only stands out amongst the history books in Yellow and Blue, but also at the national level. Heading into 2023, Hansen ranks third in Division I women's soccer in both career goals and points. Her 39 goals trail only Anna Podojil of Arkansas (45) and Emma Hawkins of Oklahoma (40), while Hansen is tied with two others. Her 96 points rank her alone in third at the DI level. Hansen trails only Podojil's 119 points and Pittsburg's Amanda West who has accumulated 97 points.
Â
Tanner has been a mainstay in between the posts for the Jackrabbits over the past two seasons. The reigning back-to-back Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year, Tanner has registered a 25-4-6 record for the Jacks over the course of three seasons. While sharing duties guarding the goal a season ago, Tanner recorded a 0.316 goals-against average which made her the NCAA's statistical champion in the category. Her 0.897 save percentage ranked her second at the Division I level. She enters the season with a career .729 goals-against average which ranks ninth among all active DI goalkeepers.Â
Â
Other awards earned by the Jacks from the league were all-conference honors for
Kaycee Manding (1st Team),
Laney Murdzek (1st Team),
Reagan Anderson (2nd Team),
Hayley Lindaman (2nd Team),
Avery Murdzek (2nd Team) and
Lauren Eckerle (All-Newcomer Team). Hansen (1st Team),
Kaycee Manding (2nd Team) and
Laney Murdzek (3rd Team) were named United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Team picks, while Tanner was selected as an Academic All-American.
Â
SDSU will have to make up for the loss of six letterwinners. Included in the fold were three regular starters in
Cece Limongi,
Karlee Manding and
Rachel Preston, as well as alums in goalkeeper
Hailee Fischer as well as Mo Tolley and
Emily Cameron.
Â
SDSU ranked among the best in the nation a season ago. The Jackrabbits had an RPI ranking as high as 46th before they eventually ended at 59th following their season-ending defeat in 2022.
Â
Manitoba is preparing for its 2023 season which officially begins on Aug. 26. The Bisons have played North Dakota and North Dakota State on its trip towards Brookings, falling 4-1 and 2-0 in the two matches, respectively.Â
Â
Augustana returns to action in 2023 following an 11-7-2 campaign that ended in the NSIC Tournament Semifinals. Saturday's match serves as an exhibition for the Vikings as they prepare for their regular season opener on Sept. 1 versus Central Missouri.Â
