BROOKINGS, S.D. — Four different Jackrabbits scored goals, including
Maya Hansen in record-breaking fashion, as South Dakota State defeated Manitoba 4-0 to begin their 2023 campaign on Thursday at Fishback Soccer Park.Â
Â
It was a quiet first 10 minutes of the contest before the Jackrabbits took over.Â
Â
A dish from
Laney Murdzek set up
Avery LeBlanc who sent a right-footed shot from outside the box over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net. The first shot of the game made it 1-0 in the 11th minute and from there the Jackrabbits wouldn't look back.Â
Â
SDSU newcomer
Jadenn Carrillo forced a handball in the box in the 27th minute and was rewarded with a penalty kick. She converted on the opportunity and put the Jacks ahead 2-0 which the score remained heading into halftime.Â
Â
Two shots early in the second half by Hansen went awry, but she'd capitalize on her third attempt.Â
Â
Passes from
Hayley Lindaman and
Laney Murdzek set up Hansen on the edge of the top of the box. SDSU's senior forward spun around one defender then dribbled past a second in front of the goal. Hansen sent a left-footed shot just inside the near pipe to find the back of the net to put the Jackrabbits in front, 3-0, in the 60th minute.Â
Â
In the process, Hansen scored her 40th goal of her college career, becoming the program's all-time goals record holder by breaking a tie with Jennifer (Briggs) Cleary. Hansen also improved her SDSU-record point total as she now sits at 98 during her Jackrabbit tenure.Â
Â
SDSU closed out the score column with a fourth goal just three minutes later.
Reagan Anderson sent a pass to
Ellie Gusman who crossed the ball in front of the net.
Jenna Hallen struck the ball past the keeper to put SDSU on top, 4-0.Â
Â
"The depth of the team really stood out tonight," South Dakota State head coach
Brock Thompson said. "I felt like in the second half, we had a little bit of a lull and we had one in the first half as well, but the players that went into the game in both halves really changed the game. They changed our energy level and added a different element to the game too, so that's a really exciting thing."

Notes
- Carrillo notched her first goal of her time in Yellow and Blue, but not of her college career. She previously spent four years at Concordia University Irvine and scored 27 goals during her career there.Â
- LeBlanc and Hallen notched impact personal goals. LeBlanc's strike into the net was the second of her SDSU career and first since the 2021 spring season. Hallen's goal was the first of her college tenure.
- A total of 13 points were accumulated by eight Jackrabbits on Thursday. That point output is the most by an SDSU squad since a victory over Morningside in the fall of 2021 saw the Jacks total 20.Â
- Several Jackrabbits made their first appearances at SDSU in the win. SDSU players that competed includes Carrillo, Gusman, Katelyn Beulke, Birna Bjornsdottir, Maleah Evans, Taryn Hettich, Shelby Hopeau and Emma Knack.Â
- Jocelyn Tanner started in goal for the Jackrabbits and made one save. Knack played the final 45 minutes and faced one shot.Â
- SDSU finished with a 16-3 edge in shots and 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Jackrabbits also had 10 corner kick opportunities.Â
