BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State plays its first game this season alone atop The Summit League standings on Thursday when the Jackrabbits welcome Kansas City to Frost Arena. Tipoff between the Jacks and Roos is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the game being televised on CBS Sports Network.
Â
The Jackrabbits are coming off back-to-back victories and stand at 11-9 overall. SDSU earned a 90-87 win over Omaha at home last Thursday, then defeated South Dakota 73-55 as part of the Interstate Series in Vermillion on Saturday.Â
Â
In the win over the Mavericks, SDSU registered its sixth straight game of shooting over 50% from the field. The Jackrabbits needed to hold off a rally by Omaha, while they were boosted by
Charlie Easley who scored the team's last nine points.
Â
The Jacks extended their winning streak to seven over the Coyotes at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. The stretch for SDSU is its longest in the series since the early 2000s. SDSU's 18-point win matches its largest margin of victory over USD in Vermillion since 1974. SDSU has now won 21 of the last 27 rivalry matchups.
South Dakota State is 4-1 in conference play with its lone loss a 99-80 result at Denver on Jan. 13. The Jackrabbits sit directly ahead of St. Thomas and Denver who are tied for second in the standings with each sporting 3-2 league records.
Â
Zeke Mayo has produced 10 performances of 20-plus points for the Jackrabbits, including in five of the last seven contests as well as in consecutive outings. For his efforts last week, he was honored on Monday as the Ticketsmarter Summit League Performer of the Week. Mayo continues to lead the team averaging 18.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
Â
William Kyle III, who's scored double digits in seven straight contests, is averaging 13.2 points. Easley follows at an 11.2 clip and
Luke Appel averages 10.9 points while starting in all 20 games.Â
Â
SDSU is 21-6 all-time versus Kansas City. The Jacks have won the last nine meetings and their last loss to the Roos in Brookings came in 2011. Kansas City is 8-12 overall this season and 2-3 in conference play. The Roos are coming off of a 74-72 win at Omaha this past Saturday. Â
