BOZEMAN, Mont. — South Dakota State is slated to host Montana State as part of a doubleheader with the Jackrabbit women's basketball team on Saturday. The men's contest between the Jackrabbits and Bobcats is scheduled to tipoff at 4:15 p.m.
Â
Saturday's matchup serves as the Jackrabbits' final non-conference game. SDSU and MSU face off as part of the Big Sky-Summit Challenge. The Jacks began the conference competition by dropping a 75-73 decision in the final seconds to Big Sky favorite Weber State on Wednesday.Â
Â
Zeke Mayo led SDSU in scoring in the contest by recording 20 points, which included a layup in transition with 29 seconds remaining that capped a rally that saw SDSU down 13 points with under six minutes remaining. Dillon Jones, who recorded a near double-double with 23 points and nine rebounds for Weber State, hit a fadeaway jumper that fell through the net with a tenth of a second remaining.
Â
The Jackrabbits are 7-8 overall heading into Saturday's matchup versus the Bobcats. Four Jacks average double digits in scoring in Mayo (17.7),
William Kyle III (12.1),
Luke Appel (11.1) and
Charlie Easley (10.9). Mayo also paces the Jacks in rebounding (6.2) and assists (3.2). SDSU leads The Summit League in field goal percentage defense (41.0%) and is second in field goal percentage (46.2%).Â
Â
The Jacks, the preseason favorites for The Summit League regular season title, will face a program in Montana State that has won the last two Big Sky Conference tournament titles. However, the Bobcats are under a new regime with first-year head coach Matt Logie and didn't return a starter from their 2022-23 roster.Â
Â
Montana State enters Saturday's game at 6-8 overall. The Bobcats have lost their last two games, which includes an 86-64 defeat at Weber State and an 82-76 loss at home to Oral Roberts. Brian Goracke leads MSU in scoring with 15.9 points, while Robert Ford III leads the Bobcats in rebounding (7.6) and steals (2.9).Â
Â
SDSU holds a 3-2 all-time series edge over Montana State. The Jacks lost in Bozeman to the 'Cats in 2019 (77-70), then defeated them in Brookings in 2021 by a 91-74 score.Â
