BROOKINGS, S.D. - A total team effort lifted the South Dakota State volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) sweep over Omaha Thursday night at First Bank & Trust Arena. The Jackrabbits remain unbeaten at 15-0 (4-0 Summit) while Omaha drops to 5-10 (3-1 Summit).
SDSU's 15-match win streak is the team's longest since a 20-win streak in 1975.
The Jacks scored points in all areas, notching 38 kills, 12Â blocks and seven ace serves as a team. They hit .255 for the match and held the Mavericks to a .167 clip. Four players had at least five kills and five took part in at least three blocks.
Sylvie Zgonc posted a match-high 11 kills to go with five digs, three block assists, two assists and an ace serve.
Katie Van Egdom matched her season best with eight kills.
The Jackrabbits' middle blockers,
Madison Burr and
Sydni Schetnan, combined for 13 kills and only one error for a .458 attack rate. Burr (seven kills) recorded five blocks and Schetnan (five kills) had six blocks. Rightsides
Annalee Ventling-Brown and
Alyssa Groves chipped in four blocks apiece.
Alia Schlimgen paced the defense with 12 digs and
Rylee Martin added nine.
Joslyn Richardson's three ace serves was the most of all players. Martin tallied 14 assists and
Camryn Honn had 10. Honn put down two aces and Martin one.
Kali Jurgensmeier and McKenna Ruch led Omaha with 11 kills each.
Set one: Neither team led by more than two in the opening set until the Jackrabbits won it with six straight points. Ahead 5-3 early in the set, SDSU gave up four straight to the Mavs and trailed by two, 5-7. Down two, 8-10, SDSU got a kill and a block from
Alyssa Groves during a 3-0 stretch to regain the lead. Omaha held a one-point edge, 19-18, before the Jacks' six consecutive points for the win. Groves posted back-to-back blocks during the run and
Sylvie Zgonc had consecutive kills to take the set.
Set two: Omaha took a 12-7 lead in set two, prompting a timeout call by the Jackrabbits. Out of the break, SDSU turned the tables with seven of the next eight.
Sydni Schetnan and Zgonc each tallied two kills in that run and Martin had an ace.
Katie Van Egdom and
Madison Burr put down two kills apiece during a 5-0 run to lead 20-17. Omaha came back to tie the set at 20-all. The Jacks scored five of the final six points to go up two sets to none.
Set three: The final set of the contest was another tight one. The sides went back-and-forth until, tied at 8-8, SDSU won the next three points with kills from
Camryn Honn and
Annalee Ventling-Brown. SDSU strung together another 3-0 run with a kill and an ace from Zgonc and a kill from Van Egdom to lead 16-11. The Jacks went ahead by six, 18-12, off an ace by
Joslyn Richardson. Omaha worked back within two, 18-16, but the Jacks pulled away again with three straight and another ace by Honn. A service error by Omaha won the match for the Jackrabbits.

- The Jackrabbits have swept nine opponents this season.
- SDSU has secured a winning record for the third time in the last four seasons.
