ST. PAUL, Minn. — South Dakota State broke through a deadlocked clash with an 82nd minute goal to earn a 1-0 shutout win over St. Thomas on Sunday, Oct. 6, in a Summit League women's soccer match at the Tommies' South Field.

The Jackrabbits had a majority of the scoring opportunities in the meeting, but were initially unable to capitalize. SDSU had a 9-2 edge in shots in the first half as St. Thomas goalkeeper Kendall Ellis made three of six team saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Action in the second half was more even sided. While SDSU still outshot St. Thomas 5-4 in the half, Jackrabbit goalkeeper Emma Knack was forced to make two saves after starter Stephanie Leckwold made one in the first half.

SDSU found the game winner on a heads up play by a freshman forward.

Junior captain Lauren Eckerle dribbled towards the box and took advantage of some open space by hitting a strike towards goal. Her shot hit the crossbar and the ball came sailing back to the pitch. Adrianne Agbayani split her way between two Tommie defenders and hit a header into a wide open net with just over eight minutes remaining.

South Dakota State held control late by producing two corner kick opportunities and not allowing a St. Thomas shot during the final moments of the contest.

The Jackrabbits improved to 10-2-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play behind the victory. The Tommies dropped to 4-6-2 (0-2-1).

NOTES

SDSU is now 4-0 all-time against St. Thomas. The Jackrabbits outshot the Tommies 14-6 and had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
The win gives the Jacks double-digit victories for the 12th consecutive season. That span is the longest among the program's Summit League foes. The Jacks boast more 10-win seasons (14) than any other conference school since 2010 and have achieved the feat in 16 of the last 17 seasons.
The Jackrabbits remain on top of The Summit League table thanks to the win. SDSU (9) sits directly ahead of Oral Roberts (7) and North Dakota State (7).
Agbayani scored the second goal of her collegiate career. Her first career-goal came in a road victory at Northern Colorado on Aug. 29. Eckerle was credited with her first assist of the season.
SDSU is in the midst of a six-match winning streak and undefeated span of 10 consecutive matches. The last nine matches have seen the Jacks outscore their foes 25-5.
The Jackrabbits are 7-1 in road matches this season. That win total is tied for the most in a single season ever with SDSU's 2022 and 2001 squads. The streak of 10 matches unbeaten is tied for the fourth longest in program history.

South Dakota State returns to Brookings for its next match. The Jackrabbits host South Dakota as a part of the Interstate Series, presented by First Interstate Bank on Friday, Oct. 11. First kick between the Jacks and Coyotes is slated for 6 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park.
