BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State needed a late second-half goal to force extra time, then it took until the second overtime for the Jackrabbits to capitalize on a
Kaycee Manding free kick which resulted in a golden goal, lifting SDSU to a 2-1 victory over South Dakota on Friday at Fishback Soccer Park. The win for the third-seeded Jackrabbits advanced them to The Summit League Women's Soccer Championship semifinals, while the sixth-seeded Coyotes season came to an end.
Â
The Jackrabbits maintained a majority of the possession for the duration of the match, including the first half. SDSU produced an 8-1 edge in shots, while forcing USD goalkeeper Cambell Fischer to make three saves, during the opening 45 minutes. However, the two sides went into halftime scoreless.Â
Â
South Dakota jumped into the lead early in the second half. A series of passes found their way into the box for the Coyotes and Brooklyn Bordson was on the receiving end, heading a shot into the net in the 54th minute.Â
Â
The Yotes kept the Jacks off the board for the next 30 minutes as SDSU piled up shots. The Jacks recorded their most shots in a half against a conference foe this season with 16 during the second half.
SDSU finally found its equalizer in the 86th minute.Â
Laney Murdzek got a run started on the SDSU side of the field. She passed the ball past midfield to
Mia Bosch who dribbled by a defender as she neared the box. Bosch found
Katherine Jones next to the penalty kick spot. The Jackrabbit graduate student shielded the ball from a defender at her back, turned to her left and struck a right-footed shot past the Coyote keeper's outstretched arms to tie the score at 1-1.Â
Â
"It's really about the players, they never really lost belief," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said of tying the score late. "That's a hard moment to play most of the second half down a goal. We still had a lot of confidence and belief. This is a really experienced group. We got the goal and it energized us."
South Dakota State put together two more shots, one which needing saving, before settling for extra time. The Jackrabbits outshot the Coyotes 5-2 during the first 10-minute overtime period, but neither team took advantage.Â
Â
That set up the final 10 minutes of play before a possible deciding penalty-kick session.
Â
The second overtime period started quick with the Jackrabbits gaining possession from USD. The Jacks drew a foul just eight seconds into overtime, setting SDSU up with a free kick from the left side of the pitch nearly 50 yards out from the Coyote goal. Manding lined up for the opportunity and sent the ball towards the box. Her kick sailed over a wave of players, bounced off the ground between the USD keeper and a defender, and into the back-right corner of the net to give her a goal and a Jackrabbit double overtime win.Â
Â
"Special player," Thompson said of Manding "Obviously she's a player that strikes an unbelievably good ball. Her passing range and passing deception are exceptional and not just the goal that won it for us, which was a great ball in the box, but even some some of the balls she played in the box late in the second half."
Â
Manding's golden goal came in the 101st minute to give SDSU its first overtime victory since 2021. The Jackrabbits improved to 13-4-2 overall to keep their season alive. South Dakota's season closed with a 3-9-6 record.
