South Dakota State continues its 2024 Summit League Championship run on Thursday when the Jackrabbits take on Denver in the tournament semifinals. The Jacks and Pioneers meet at noon on North Dakota State's Dacotah Field. The winner of their matchup will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 1 NDSU and No. 5 Oral Roberts.
The Jacks and Pios have met four prior times in Summit League tournament play. Three of the four meetings have went to penalty kicks after the teams tied 1-1 in regulation. SDSU won the 2014 title in penalty kicks by a 5-4 margin, Denver won a 2016 semifinal matchup by a 4-2 margin, then SDSU earned the 2019 title by a 4-2 margin. The Jacks won the 2021 title in regulation in Denver, 4-2, over the Pioneers.
SDSU is 12-6-6 all-time in The Summit League tournament. The Jackrabbits have qualified for every Summit League Championship tournament but one (2012) since the 2008 season. SDSU is 7-5-3 in the semifinal round of the conference tournament.
South Dakota State will face one of its most competitive foes in its Summit League tenure on Thursday. The Jackrabbits are 7-4-6 all-time against the Pioneers. Denver has had the edge of late with a 3-1-1 record over SDSU, including a 2-1 victory in Brookings on Oct. 24.Â
SDSU had outshot every opponent it faced prior to its matchup against Denver. The Pioneers dictated the attack that night at Fishback, outshooting the Jacks 22-8. Denver scored a goal in the 65th minute, then SDSU tied it on an Ava Grate goal in the 69th minute. A goal in the 74th minute by Payten Ivins made the difference for the Pioneers.Â
The Jackrabbits have recorded at least 10 wins in 12 consecutive seasons. SDSU has now won at least 12 matches in each of the last seven campaigns, while the season prior the program recorded 11 in Brock Thompson's first season as head coach.
SDSU has had a variety of close calls in matches this season. The Jackrabbits have lost all four of their matches this season by a single goal margin and are 6-4 in one-goal games this year. SDSU is 10-0 this season when scoring two-plus goals and 11-1-1 when getting on the board first.
