ROCHESTER, Minn. — Gigi Hioki claimed event titles in a pair of freestyle events Friday to lead the South Dakota State women's swimming and diving team on the opening day of the Huskies Invite held at the Rochester Rec Center.
A sophomore from Liberty Lake, Washington, Hioki opened the afternoon session by clocking a winning time of 1 minute, 53.23 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle. She came back later in the day to notch a victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:08.01.
Hioki closed Day 1 by swimming the leadoff leg for the Jackrabbits' third-place 200 freestyle relay. She teamed with Emma Schultz, Mia Pendleton and Jenna Currier for a time of 1:37.32.
Schultz also contributed an eighth-place individual time of 54.07 seconds in the 100 freestyle and was ninth in the 200 freestyle, 1:56.99.
In the 100 backstroke, Lily Esmas paced SDSU with a third-place showing, 59.31 seconds, with freshman Kailee Crane taking seventh in 1:00.46.
Crane also was part of a young trio of Jackrabbits held down three spots in the top eight of the 400 individual medley. Freshman Emma Ingalls led the contingent by placing sixth in 4:40.31, followed by sophomore Poppy Mead in seventh, 4:41.24, and Crane with an eighth-place time of 4:42.36.
Mead later turned in a seventh-place time of 5:17.76 in the 500 freestyle.
SDSU added two more top-eight finishes in the 100 butterfly as Sara Juez placed sixth in 58.79 seconds and freshman Isabella Gnewuch came in eighth in the timed final in 59.30 seconds.
Morgan Nelson rounded out the Jackrabbits' top-eight individual finishes with a sixth-place time of 1:08.33 in the 100 breaststroke.
SDSU stands in third place out of five teams after tallying 791 points in the swimming events. Northern Iowa leads the team race with 960 points, followed by 913 from South Dakota.

The Huskies Invite concludes Saturday with diving events starting at 10 a.m. and swimming competition beginning at 1 p.m.
