South Dakota State hosts Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon in the second of a three-game homestand for the Jackrabbits.
The Jackrabbits are 8-2 on the season with five consecutive wins, including a top-25 win over Oregon and a pair of victories in the Summit League-Big Sky Challenge last week. Most recently, SDSU topped Dakota Wesleyan, 76-48, and got 26 points from Haleigh Timmer in that game.
Northern Iowa is 5-4 on the year, but all four Panther losses have been by six points or fewer. The Panthers have an 87-75 home win over then-No. 8 Iowa State on their resume. UNI most recently beat South Dakota 78-59 at home in Cedar Falls. Maya McDermott leads UNI and is sixth in the country with 23.0 points per game.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State hosts another mid-major foe in Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Arena. This is the eighth meeting between these teams over the last 10 seasons.
- The Jackrabbits are 8-2 on the season. Since dropping back-to-back games to now-No. 9/10 Duke and still unbeaten now-No. 25/RV Georgia Tech, SDSU has won five consecutive games. The Jacks have two wins over ranked opponents.
- Saturday's game against UNI will be the 800th of Aaron Johnston's head coaching career.
- SDSU has gutted out its wins this year as six of 10 games have been decided by eight or fewer points. The Jacks are 5-1 in those contests.
- South Dakota State was voted at the top of the College Inside Mid-Major Top 25 for the second consecutive week and is receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches polls.
- Brooklyn Meyer and Haleigh Timmer have each set new career highs in the last eight days. Brooklyn Meyer scored 32 at Montana last weekend and Haleigh Timmer put up 26 against Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday night.
- SDSU is shooting better than 37 percent from the 3-point line on the year, ranking 25th in the nation. UNI is 42 percent from deep this year, which is second in the country.
- Three qualifying Jackrabbits are shooting above 50 percent this year, led by .557 shooting from Brooklyn Meyer.
- Northern Iowa is 5-4 on the season, but all four losses have been by six points or fewer. The Panthers beat then-No. 8 Iowa State 87-75 on November 20.
- UNI's Maya McDermott ranks sixth in the country in scoring average and is one of two players averaging at least 20 points and five assists per game.
