South Dakota State is set to play its final home game of its non-conference portion of its schedule at 7 p.m. on Thursday when the Jackrabbits host Chadron State inside First Bank & Trust Arena. SDSU's non-conference slate ends with a Dec. 29 contest at current No. 6 Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
The Jackrabbits are 8-5 overall heading into the matchup against the Eagles. SDSU went on the road for a two-game swing last week, falling 77-63 at Nevada and 81-70 at Colorado. Both games saw SDSU hold second-half leads, however the Wolf Pack and Buffaloes eventually earned home victories.Â
Leading SDSU in scoring for the road trip was
Joe Sayler. The redshirt freshman guard averaged 15.5 points between the two contests while playing 31 minutes per contest. Sayler has scored in double figures in eight of the 11 games he's played in this season.
SDSU's remaining backcourt starters both had double-digit games last week.
Owen Larson scored 11 points and had a career-high eight rebounds at Nevada.
Kalen Garry recorded 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting in the defeat at Colorado this past Saturday.
Oscar Cluff saw his double-double streak end at five games during the road stretch. Cluff, with his 16.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game marks, remains one of the most efficient players in DI men's basketball. He ranks third in Player Efficiency (34.4) behind Auburn's Johni Broome (36.7) and Villanova's Eric Dixon (34.4). He ranks top five in the country individually in double-doubles (8), total rebounds (130) and field goal percentage (71.4%).
SDSU has assured itself a winning record heading into its conference schedule. It's the first time the Jacks will head into conference play with more victories than defeats since the 2021-22 campaign.Â
The Jackrabbits take on Chadron State for the third time ever. SDSU won both matchups by 87-42 and 87-52 scores, in consecutive ayers of 2014 and 2015, in Frost Arena. The Eagles travel to Brookings with a 6-6 overall record and a 2-2 ledger in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.Â
