South Dakota State continues its appearance in the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge on Saturday when the Jackrabbits host Eastern Washington. The Jacks and Eagles are slated for a 6 p.m. tipoff in First Bank & Trust Arena.Â
SDSU is 2-0 versus EWU all-time with the last matchup a memorable one. The two sides met in Brookings on Dec. 10 during the 2022-23 season. The Eags held a 69-46 lead following a 3-pointer with 8:51 remaining. The Jackrabbits outscored EWU 31-7 in less than nine minutes, capped by a
Zeke Mayo field goal with 2.2 seconds left. SDSU closed out a win, 77-76.Â
The Jackrabbits are coming off a 71-67 defeat at Montana on Wednesday. SDSU trailed by as many as 13 and was down 38-27 at halftime to the Griz. The Jacks tied the score at 53 midway through the second half. Montana regained the lead and was up 69-67 with less than a minute to play, but SDSU had a 3-point attempt to take the lead with 18 seconds on the clock fall off the rim.
SDSU was without its two seniors,
Oscar Cluff and
Isaac Lindsey, in the matchup in Missoula. Two Jacks had career games in in
Damon Wilkinson and
William Whorton. Wilkinson went 7-for-9 from the field and had career highs in points (14), rebounds (7) and minutes (19). Whorton matched his career highs in points (8) and rebounds (6) and played a career-best 21 minutes.
Before missing Wednesday's contest, Cluff was off to stellar nine-game start. A two-time conference Performer of the Week and the league's Performer of the Month for November, Cluff averages 18.3 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. His seven double-doubles this season rank second in the nation, his rebound average is fourth and his 70.7% from the field is seventh.
SDSU is 7-3 overall this season which includes losses to Big Sky foes in Montana and Northern Colorado. The Jackrabbits are 15th among Division I schools in rebound margin (9.8) and 25th in fouls per game (14.4).
Eastern Washington is 2-7 this season but most recently defeated North Dakota, 87-81, in Cheney. The Eags are led by veteran coach Dan Monson who is in his first season at EWU.
