MEET 7: South Dakota State at Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships |
BROOKINGS, SD – South Dakota State will head north to Fargo, ND for the 2024 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility.
Competition will kick off at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday with the multi events. Field events will start at 3 p.m. on Friday and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and running events are set for 3:30 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Four Jackrabbits are looking to defend their 2023 indoor championship titles:
Leah Hisken (5,000-meter run),
Daniel Burkhalter (mile run),
Pierre Lear (60-meter hurdles) and
Hunter Wallster (weight throw).
SUMMIT LEAGUE SUCCESS: Brielle Dixon and
Brandon Kampsen represent SDSU atop the Summit League standings in their respective events. Dixon currently holds the fastest 60-meter hurdle time with a blistering 8.30 as Kampsen sits atop the mile with a clocking of 4:06.19.
WIPF HONORED BY SUMMIT: South Dakota State's own
Jared Wipf has been named the TicketSmarter Summit League Men's Track Peak Performer of the Week, league officials announced Jan. 23.
Wipf first ran a new personal best of 6.77 in the 60-meter dash prelims before besting himself again and clocking a 6.73 in the event finals. His new time broke the SDSU school record previously held by Coby Hilton and gave him a runner-up finish in the event.
The mark also now ranks second in the league so far this season and is Wipf's second career weekly accolade.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The fifth weekly regional ranking by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association was released on Feb. 5, with the Jackrabbit men moving up one spot to 22
nd and the women staying in 21
st in the Midwest Region.
MEN, WOMEN PICKED THIRD IN PRESEASON POLL: The Jackrabbit men and women were each chosen to finish third in the 2024 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Preseason Poll, officials announced Thursday.

Jaiden Boomsma, South Dakota State

- Took second in the long jump with a mark of 5.96/19'6.75" and eighth in the 60m with a 13.25
- Season best/personal best mark of 6.05/19'10.25" in long jump and season best/personal best of 7.51 in the 60m dash at USD Alumni meet
- Won the long jump at four different meets and took second at three meets
Leah Hisken, South Dakota State

- Finished second in the 3000 at Jim Emmerich and ISU Classic

- Capped off outstanding run with a 60m hurdle PR of 7.81 to win gold in the event finals and grabbed the silver in the 4x400m relay at conference championships
- Broke school record twice in one meet at Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational (prelims and finals)
Hunter Wallster, South Dakota State

- Recorded a season best/personal best weight throw mark of 20.06m/65'9.75" to win the event at the Summit League Championships
- Season best/personal best shot put mark of 12.84m/42'1.5" for sixth place at USD Alumni meet
- Placed in top three of the weight throw in all seven appearances
A LOOK AHEAD: Should South Dakota State have any national qualifiers, athletes will compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston, Massachusetts on March 8 and 9.
