FARGO, ND – South Dakota State secured medals in five different events alongside a broken school record in the first day of competition at the 2024 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
WOMEN
Leah Hisken claimed the first medal for the Jackrabbits as she clocked a 9:35.32 to claim bronze.
Jessica Lutmer finished 10
th in 9:59.60 as
Emma Gonzalez (10:13.58) was 12
th,
Jenna Soine (10:17.74) was 13
th and
Nicole Greyer (10:18.21) took 14
th.
History came in the form of the women's distance medley relay squad.
Caitlin Bright,
Emily Rystrom,
Harley Fischer and
Grace Waage teamed up to clock an 11:43.09 for the bronze medal and the fastest time in school history.
Jaiden Boomsma and
Brielle Dixon each qualified for the finals of the women's 60-meter dash, with Dixon joining the SDSU All-Time List with a 7.63 to tie for fifth.
Dixon will also compete in the 60-meter hurdle finals alongside
Savannah Risseeuw. The duo each ran times just .01 seconds off their personal bests (8.31 and 8.57, respectively).
Boomsma also qualified for the finals of the women's 200-meter dash after clocking a 25.05.
Claire Beckman took second in her heat of the 800-meter run to automatically qualify for tomorrow's event finals.
Reese Luze (2:16.29, ninth), Fischer (2:16.45, 10
th) and
Hannah Spoden (2:18.18, 11
th) all finished just outside of qualification.
As for additional final results on the day, Lizzy Gillingham scored 3446 points in the women's pentathlon to finish fifth in the event and jump to fifth on the SDSU All-Time List. She also earned a new personal best in the high jump with a mark of 5-00.50.
Three Jackrabbits competed in the 400-meter dash prelims:
Erika Kuntz (57.98, 11
th),
Jessica Boekelheide (58.44, 13
th) and Rystrom (58.66, 14
th).
Layne Kirkendoll took 12
th overall in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 17-10.75.
Milee Young qualified for the weight throw finals and threw a 56-00.50 for a ninth place finish and a new PR.
The SDSU women currently sit fourth in the team standings with 16 points as North Dakota is first with 67 points and North Dakota State is second with 34 points.
MEN
Cody Larson grabbed the first medal on the men's side with a silver in the 3000-meter run as he crossed the finish line in 8:20.13.
Carson Noecker (8:22.65, sixth) and
Josh Becker (8:23.12, seventh) finished close behind.
It was an All-Time performance for the distance medley relay team, who clocked a 9:55.30 for the third fastest mark in school history.
Jackson Dutcher,
Reggie Slaba,
Andrew Moeller and
Will Lohr teamed up to take silver in the event.
Two more medals were added to the total courtesy of the weight throw.
Hunter Wallster took second place with a mark of 61-04.75 after being named the Summit League Men's Scholar of the Championship and
Caiden Fredrick finished third with a 60-05.25. His marked re-solidified his spot as 10
th on the SDSU All-Time List. Also in the event finals were
Ethan Fischer (57-02.25, seventh) and
Ryan Hackbart (51-08.50, PR, ninth).
Jared Wipf and
Drew Olson will represent SDSU in the 60-meter dash finals while
Pierre Lear will compete in the 60-meter hurdle finals.
Jake Werner is moving on to the finals of the 200-meter dash after running the second-fastest time overall in the prelims with a 21.86.
Thailan Hallman clocked the fastest time in the men's 400-meter prelims with a 48.87 to qualify for the event finals alongside
James Pierce (49.78).
Brandon Kampsen earned an automatic qualification to the 800-meter finals with a second place finish in his heat with a time of 1:54.37.
In the men's heptathlon,
Ryan Benson currently sits in third through four scored events with 2848 points.
Matt Katz cleared a season best of 16-07.50 for a seventh place finish in the men's pole vault and
Rylan McDonnell finished 10
th overall in the long jump with his mark of 22-09.75.
The SDSU men currently sit in third in the team standings with 39 points as South Dakota is first with 60 points and North Dakota State is second with 57 points.
Action at the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility will resume tomorrow morning with the remaining multi events at 9:30 a.m., field events at 11:30 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m.
