South Dakota State hits the road to close out the regular season this week. The Jackrabbits take on North Dakota at 7 p.m. in Grand Forks on Thursday, followed by a 1 p.m. Saturday matchup in Fargo against North Dakota State.
Â
Thursday's contest in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center pits the two teams atop The Summit League standings. Both teams are 17-12 overall on the season, but SDSU's 10-4 conference mark has the Jackrabbits a game up in the standings ahead of North Dakota which is 9-5.
Â
SDSU can claim The Summit League's regular season title outright with a victory on Thursday. The Jackrabbits have earned eight regular season titles over the previous 11 seasons as a member of The Summit League.Â
Â
SDSU would still have an opportunity to earn a share of the regular season crown with a loss to North Dakota on Thursday. The Fighting Hawks end their season at home Saturday versus South Dakota. Behind SDSU and North Dakota in the standings are NDSU and Kansas City with each team owning 8-6 conference records.
Â
The Jackrabbits and Fighting Hawks previously met this season on New Year's Eve in Brookings. SDSU opened its conference slate with an 80-61 victory over UND in Frost Arena. For the Fighting Hawks, it was the second of three straight losses to begin the Summit League slate at the time.
Â
The first 20 minutes in Brookings on Dec. 31 were competitive with SDSU taking a 36-33 lead into halftime. UND was held to 27.6% shooting from the floor in the second half while SDSU shot a then season-high 54% from the floor.
Zeke Mayo scored a game-high 25 points and
William Kyle III added 20.
Â
While North Dakota holds the all-time series mark over SDSU at 104-95, the Jacks have been in recent control. SDSU has won 16 consecutive games against UND and won 20 of the last 21 meetings dating back to the 2003-04 slate. The one loss in that span came in Grand Forks on Dec. 15, 2011, by an 89-70 margin.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits have won three straight contests since their 72-67 loss at Kansas City on Feb. 15. SDSU hasn't had a four-game stretch of victories yet during the 2023-24 season.
