BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State continues its stretch at home on Sunday when the Jackrabbits host South Dakota as part of the Interstate Series presented by First Interstate Bank. The contest tips off at 4 p.m. and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
Â
The Jackrabbits fell in the first game of a three-game homestand on Thursday to North Dakota State, 74-73. SDSU and NDSU went into overtime tied at 65 following a
Zeke Mayo 3-pointer that knotted the score even with 5.4 seconds remaining. The Jacks led 73-72 with time winding down when a missed Bison shot was tipped in with 1.3 seconds left. SDSU's ensuing attempt from 3-point range by
Luke Appel didn't fall, giving NDSU its first victory in Brookings since 2016.
Â
SDSU's Mayo registered 35 points in the defeat. The output was the second highest of his SDSU tenure, trailing only his career-high 41 he set in a victory over NDSU last year. He was 13 of 14 at the free throw line which were career bests.
Â
Appel produced his first double-double of the season, and second of his career on Thursday. He had a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with 10 points.
William Kyle III extended a streak of double-digit scoring efforts to ten by adding 12 points with a career-high four blocks.
Â
Despite the loss, SDSU is in a tie for first in The Summit League standings with North Dakota as each sit 5-3 in conference play. Omaha is in third at 5-4 while four teams have 4-4 records.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits (12-10) and Coyotes (9-14) meet for the second time this season. The two sides met in Vermillion just two weeks ago with SDSU coming away with a 73-55 win. The Jacks never trailed and halted two USD runs in the second half in the victory. Mayo has 20 points in the victory followed by
Charlie Easley with 19.
Â
SDSU has won seven straight in the Interstate Series over USD. The stretch for the Jacks is the longest over the Yotes since the early 2000s. The Jackrabbits have won 21 of the last 27 and are 16-2 in Brookings over USD during the 21st century.
Â
USD has lost four straight and is 2-6 in league play. Kaleb Stewart averages 21.7 points in Summit action, while Lahat Thioune has a 12.8 points/11.0 rebounds clip.
