DAYTON, Ohio — Dayton put a host of crooked numbers on the scoreboard Sunday afternoon, defeating South Dakota State, 16-6, in the finale of a college baseball series at Woerner Fieldat AES Ohio Stadium.
Â
In winning the final three games of the four-game series, the Flyers improved to 9-6 overall. SDSU dropped to 7-9 on the season.
Â
The Jackrabbits scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, only to see Dayton grab the lead with four runs in the home half of the frame. Jess Bellows plated the first SDSU tally with a squeeze bunt that brought home Cael Frost.
Â
Dayton's four-run second inning featured a three-run home run by Eddie Yamin IV off Jackrabbit starter Arlen Peters, followed by an RBI single by Carlos Castillo. Yamin also factored in a three-run fourth inning with a two-run single in ending the game with five runs batted in.
Â
Frost delivered a run-scoring single and Adam Benes drew a bases-loaded walk to account for two Jackrabbit runs in the top of the fifth as SDSU drew to within 8-4.
Â
As they did throughout the series, the Flyers responded with a three-run bottom of the fifth and ended any hopes of an SDSU comeback with a five-run seventh inning. Mason Dobie hit a two-run homer in the fifth, while Castillo drove in a run in the seventh with a double and David Pedanou delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing, three-run triple. Pedanou walked three times and scored five runs while Castillo tallied three of Dayton's 12 hits.
Â
SDSU's final two runs scored on Dayton miscues in the ninth inning as Davis Carr and Carter Sintek each scored on separate wild pitches after reaching base on a hit by pitch and walk, respectively.
Â
SDSU's seven hits were scattered among seven different players. Sintek reached base three times with a hit and two walks, as did Reece Anderson via a hit, walk and hit by pitch.
Â
Peters suffered the loss after allowing six runs — five earned — over three innings. He walked five and struck out only one.
Â
Eli Majick picked up the win in relief for the Flyers after striking out six in 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Dayton starter A. Tran gave up the first four Jackrabbit runs in 4 1/3 frames, striking out five and walking four.
