DAYTON, Ohio — Dayton ambushed South Dakota State with five first-inning runs and went on to defeat the Jackrabbits, 7-3, in college baseball action Saturday afternoon at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.

In taking a two-games-to-one lead in the weekend series, the Flyers improved to 8-6 overall. SDSU dropped to 7-8 on the season.

The Flyers sent 10 men to the plate in the opening inning against SDSU starter Jake Goble. The first two batters in the inning drew bases on balls to set up a two-run double by David Mendez and a two-run single by David Pedanou. The final run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Yamin IV.

Back-to-back triples by Jess Bellows and Bryce Ronken led to a Jackrabbit run in the top of the second inning, but Dayton countered with runs in the fourth and fifth inning. Mason Dobie doubled in the fouth inning run, while Yamin tallied the final Dayton run with an RBI single.

SDSU made a bit of a comeback bid in the late innings, plating runs on sacrifice flies by Jordan Sagedahl and Luke Luskey in the seventh and eighth frames, respectively.

Jackrabbit reliever Reece Arbogast pitched three shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three. Goble struck out four and issued four free passes in his five-inning stint.

Dayton held a 10-8 advantage in hits, with four different players each collecting two.

One day after having his 20-game hitting streak come to an end, Bellows rebounded to lead the Jackrabbits at the plate by going 3-for-4. Ronken and fellow freshman Carter Sintek added two hits each.

Parker Bard earned the win for the Flyers after tossing five innings of one-run baseball. He struck out four and walked two while giving up three hits.
