SIOUX FALLS — Kolden Kringen and Sam Johnson were each two-time winners in the freestyle events to lead the South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team to a 159-75 victory over Augustana in dual action Friday at the Midco Aquatic Center.
Overall, the Jackrabbits claimed 10 of 13 event titles in improving to 3-2 in duals this season.
Kringen, a sophomore from Williston, North Dakota, set the pace in the distance freestyle events with winning times of 4:43.09 in the 500 and 9:55.61 in the 1,000.
A Sioux Falls native, Johnson led SDSU sweeps of the top two spots in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. He clocked a winning time of 46.54 seconds in the 100 after claiming the 200 in 1:42.43. Zavier Kranz was second in the 100 (47.35 seconds) and third in the 200 (1:43.49), with Denilson Cyprianos finishing as runner-up in the 200 (1:43.36).
Johnson later anchored the Jackrabbits' winning 400 freestyle relay, teaming with Liam Murray, Kranz and Cyprianos for a time of 3:07.31. Cyprianos added an individual win of his own in the 100 backstroke, 51.14 seconds, while Aiden Carstensen was second in 51.96 seconds. Carstensen also swam to a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle, 21.50 seconds, with Murray taking third in 21.85 seconds.
Sophomore Cody Vertin led a Jackrabbit sweep of the top three spots in the 200 individual medley, touching the wall first in 1:52.91. Austin Smith placed second (1:54.96) and Bryan Wong was third (1:57.68).
Smith would record an individual victory of his own in the 100 butterfly (:50.50) with freshman Nik Keuser claiming the 100 breaststroke in 56.93 seconds and Vertin placing second in 57.13 seconds.
Sophomore diver Reece Reid opened the night by winning the 3-meter competition with a score of 211.65 points over six dives and added a runner-up performance on the 1-meter board with 194.18 points. Seth Berens notched a second-place finish in the 3-meter event with 197.55 points.
UP NEXT
The Jackrabbit men wrap up the home schedule with a pair of duals next weekend. SDSU is slated to host St. Cloud State at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, followed by a 10 a.m. dual against South Dakota the next day.
