SIOUX FALLS — Kolden Kringen and Cody Vertin each captured event titles to lead the South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team on the opening night of the Coyote Invite Friday at the Midco Aquatic Center.
A sophomore from Williston, North Dakota, Kringen led a 1-2 Jackrabbit finish in the 200-yard individual medley by clocking a winning time of 1 minute, 54.14 seconds. He was followed by teammate Jon Galles in second place with a time of 1:54.55.
Also a sophomore, Vertin claimed the 500 freestyle title in his first time swimming the event this season. The Brookings native turned in a time of 4:40.36, with fellow Jackrabbit Zavier Kranz placing third in 4:43.74.
In the third and final individual event of the night, Aiden Carstensen was the top SDSU finisher in the 50 freestyle, tying for sixth place with a time of 21.08 seconds.
Kringen and Vertin also formed half of the Jackrabbits' 200 freestyle relay, which opened the meet with a third-place finish. Austin Smith and Denilson Cyprianos rounded out the quartet that combined for a time of 1:23.93.
In the women's division, Gigi Hioki was the top individual placer for SDSU with a runner-up time of 23.75 seconds. Northern Iowa's Faith Larsen won the event in 23.67 seconds.
Freshman Elyse Jahn contributed a third-place effort in the 500 freestyle, 5:11.73, with Sara Juez coming in fourth in 5:11.91. Emma Schultz added a fourth-place showing in the 200 IM, 2:08.39.

The Coyote Invite concludes Saturday with swimming sessions set for 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Diving competition will be held in between the two swimming sessions.
