SIOUX CENTER, IOWA — South Dakota State's men's team finishes runner-up with 40 points, while the women place third with 76 at the Holiday Inn Express Classic, hosted by Dordt University Saturday morning.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN
"I am very grateful for the opportunity to compete today. It was productive to get some athletes a competition. It's been a bit since the Griak and I think they took advantage of it. It was a nice step forward and certainly we've got work to do leading up to the conference championships, but it was a positive note for the Jackrabbit men today."
South Dakota State saw a solid race as three of the top five finishers of the men's 8K gold race were Jackrabbits. Dale Johnson took the crown with the Dordt University Prairie course record. Johnson clocked a time of 24:06.44, besting the previous record set by Dordt's own Joe Anderson at 24:19 in 2022. Will Lohr crossed the line for silver with a time of 24:20.02. Cade Sanvik rounded out the top-five finishers, crossing the line at 24:36.94.
Jared Lutmer took 11th in the race with a time of 24:52.59. Cormick Logue crossed the line at 25:23.90 to take 21st. Tyler O'Neill finished 10 seconds later at 25:33.17 to place 26th. Aiden Johnson crossed the line after O'Neill, placing 32nd overall with a time of 25:37.58. Keaton Olson placed 38th in the race, finishing at 25:49.15 and Will Harder rounded out the Jackrabbit lineup with a time of 26:33.01 to take 80th out of 147 competitors.
Bjorn Anderson competed in the men's open race later that morning where he finished sixth with a time of 25:45.88.
ASSISTANT COACH ALEX MUNTEFERING
"Today, we focused on pack running in the open race and the ladies executed that well. We maybe didn't read the field as well as we would have liked, so we have a bit of work to do there, but we accomplished what we wanted to accomplish. We wanted a good solid effort, but we didn't want to take away from next week's races. We have a group of 12 women competing at Pre-Nationals in seven days, so we wanted to knock off the rust a little today, but not dig into the well, and we accomplished that."
The women's team had a strong performance as well, with Emma Gonzalez leading the team, finishing at 21:38.10 to place eighth. Emma Ecker was next across the line in 11th, clocking a time of 21:44.21. Nora Peterson was the third Jackrabbit across the line, finishing at 21:48.39 to take 14th. Kelsey Schmidt and Annie Robinson rounded out SDSU's top five. Schmidt placed 19th with a time of 21:51.60, while Robinson finished at 22:09.43 to take 25th.
Kadense Dooley and Nicole Swanson cruised across the line behind Robinson in 26th and 27th, respectively. Dooley clocked a time of 22:10.02, while Swanson finished at 22:10.91. Annika Larson placed 32nd for the squad, crossing the line at 22:20.46. Starlyn Edwards finished soon after at 22:34.89 to take 37th. Marissa Garcia rounded out the Jackrabbit lineup in 58th with a time of 23:01.08.
Madalyn Childs, Lindsey Rotz, and Halle Bauer competed in the women's open race. Childs clocked 22:19.13 for third, while Rotz finished hot on her tail in fourth at 22:20.90. Bauer came barreling down the chute shortly afterwards to take ninth with a time of 23:33.35.
