BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State volleyball team used a strong block to top St. Thomas 3-1 Saturday night in front of more than 1,900 fans at First Bank & Trust Arena.
Set scores went 25-15, 27-25, 15-25, 25-23. South Dakota State improves to 11-3 on the year and remains unbeaten in conference action at 5-0. St. Thomas moves to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the Summit League.
The Jackrabbits tallied 13 blocks for the match, their most in a four-set contest this season, and were only blocked four times.
Sydni Schetnan and
Annalee Ventling-Brown paced SDSU's defense with seven and six blocks, respectively. They each had one solo block.
Madison Burr had four rejections for the Jacks and
Sylvie Zgonc added three.
Zgonc posted a pair of season highs as the junior finished with 22 kills and a .365 hitting percentage. She had just three errors on 52 swings for the night. Burr notched 11 kills to join Zgonc in double figures and put down two aces from the service line.
Hannah Klein, Schetnan and Ventling-Brown tacked on seven kills apiece. Ventling-Brown was errorless on 14 swings.
Rylee Martin gave out 46 assists and tallied 16 digs, both team highs, and set the Jackrabbits to a .324 team hitting percentage. That mark is the second best of the season for SDSU.
Joslyn Richardson added 12 digs, followed by
Rachel Wieber with 10. Wieber also had two aces.Â
St. Thomas had a 61-55 edge in kills in the match, led by Anya Schmidt with 16. The Tommies also out-aced SDSU, 9-6. Morgan Kealy had four aces.
SDSU dominated the opening set and won 25-15. St. Thomas did the same with the third set and won by the same score.
In set two, St. Thomas had set point at 24-21. The Jackrabbits scored the next three points on a Zgonc kill, Burr solo block, then Zgonc and Burr block. The Tommies again went ahead, 25-24, but SDSU won the set with the next three points. Burr had another two kills in the run and Klein won the set with a kill.
In set four, the sides traded points nearly all the way through. The Tommies scored five straight to lead 18-15. The Jacks scored six of the next eight to go back ahead at 21-20.
Hannah Klein again won the set with a kill, sealing the match for the Jackrabbits.
NOTES
South Dakota State has won five straight matches to start Summit League play.
