VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota State volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over in-state rival South Dakota Saturday night at Sanford Coyotes Sports Center. The Jackrabbits dropped the opening set, then rebounded to win the next three in convincing fashion.
The Jackrabbits remain unbeaten in Summit League action at 7-0 and improve to 13-3 overall. South Dakota moves to 12-7 on the year and 4-3 in conference matches.
SDSU set a new program record for a four-set match with 17 blocks as a team.
Sydni Schetnan led the way with nine, followed by
Annalee Ventling-Brown with eight.
Sylvie Zgonc tallied 21 kills at a .347 clip for SDSU, both her second-best marks of the season. The junior also had 11 digs on the night for her ninth double-double of the year. Freshman
Hannah Klein followed with 12 kills to go with six digs, three blocks and three services aces. Combined, SDSU's outside hitters tallied 33 kills on 80 swings with only seven errors for a .325 hitting percentage on the match.
Madison Burr hit .474 in the match and notched 10 kills out of the middle. She also had five blocks, three digs and an ace serve.
Martin dished 46 assists and had 10 digs and three kills for the Jacks. Libero
Joslyn Richardson posted 11 digs.
South Dakota tallied seven blocks and three aces as a team. Lauren Medeck paced the Coyotes' offense with 14 kills. Libero Kamryn Farris notched 23 digs.
Set one: The opening set was tightly contested with 14 ties and six lead changes. Neither side led by more than three points at any point in the set. The Jackrabbits went on a 3-0 run late to take a 19-18 lead. The Coyotes responded with seven of the next 10 points including the final three, to win 25-22. Zgonc had seven kills in set one for the Jacks.
Set two: SDSU responded with a sharp second set, hitting .321 as a team. Burr had three kills on four swings to pace SDSU in the frame. The Jacks put together a 6-1 stretch that included an ace from Burr to lead 9-5. SDSU tallied two more aces on its way to a 16-10 advantage, forcing the Coyotes to use their second timeout of the set. The Jacks maintained their lead from there, only allowing the Coyotes back within four on their way to a 25-19 win.
Set three: The Jackrabbits held the Coyotes to a .000 hitting percentage in the third set. The sides went back-and-forth early, then a 7-1 stretch for SDSU put the Jacks up 14-10. From there, neither side scored more than one consecutive point until a four-point SDSU run for the 22-15 lead. The Coyotes pulled back within four at 22-18 before the Jackrabbits took the final three points of the set.
Set four: SDSU closed out the match with its most efficient offensive performance, hitting .438 with 17 kills. Zgonc notched six kills in the frame and Burr added five kills on five swings. The set was tight until Klein put down three straight kills in a 5-0 run to go up 18-13. South Dakota put together a 5-1 run to make it a two-point game at 21-19. South Dakota State scored the final four points of the match on kills from Zgonc and Klein and two kills from the Ventling-Brown and Schetnan duo.

- South Dakota leads the all-time series 60-43. SDSU has won each of the last three regular season meetings.
- South Dakota State's 17 blocks as a team broke the previous four-set record of 16, which had been done twice (vs. Southwest Minnesota State in 2003 and at Denver in 2024).
