BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State's cross country teams travel to Stillwater, Okla. for the NCAA Midwest Regional Meet, hosted by Oklahoma State Friday morning.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN
"I think both teams come off the conference championships in a good place and ready to put up a solid race on Friday. The men would like to continue their string of top 10 regional finishes, and the women are looking to finish higher than their regional ranking and possibly finish higher than they ever have. Individually, Cody will be looking to be one of the individual qualifiers and advance to the NCAA's the following week. His training has been very consistent this fall, and he is very motivated to get to Columbia for Nationals."
THE MEET
The Jackrabbits enter the regional meet following a conference win on the men's side and a runner-up finish from the women. The men's team is looking to continue its streak of finishing in the top-10 against 34 teams, including several power conference squads. The Jacks have finished in the top-10 in eight of the past nine years, as the NCAA Regional meets were not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The best men's team finish occurred at Oklahoma State in 2019, where the team finished fourth overall. This year, the Jacks are returning to Stillwater with hopes of besting their fourth-place finish.
Individually, 13 men have earned All-Regional honors, with at least one All-Regional performer earning this honor at eight of the last nine meets. Former Jackrabbit Trent Lusignan holds the highest male finisher at second in 2013.
The women's team has seen its highest team finish at 10th of 37 teams at three of the last four regional meets. Individually, the Jackrabbit women have presented six All-Regional performers out of the last seven years. Anna Donnay currently holds the program record for the highest women's regional finish at 10th in 2019 at Oklahoma State.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
Cody Larson will be the Jackrabbit to watch on the men's side. Previously, the senior achieved his best finish at a regional meet in 2023 when he finished 33rd with a 10K time of 31:28.5. Last year, Larson finished 44th with a new 10K personal record of 30:35.4. This season, Larson clutched the Summit League crown with an 8K meet record and personal record of 23:15.59. Prior to his conference title, Larson competed amongst top competition in the Midwest at the Pre-Nationals Invitational meet where he finished eighth overall, giving him a good idea of where he stands heading into the NCAA Regional meet. Larson will be looking to earn All-Regional honors and qualify for the National meet.
Meghan Ford opened her season at the Pre-Nationals meet where she claimed a 38th-place finish with a time of 20:27.2. A few weeks later, Ford finished runner-up at the Summit League Championship, besting rival NDSU's standout Reagan Baesler with a time of 20:00.63. Ford will also look to achieve All-Regional honors and a bid to nationals.
RANKINGS
The men's squad enters the regional meet ranked eighth in the Midwest, while the women are tabbed to finish 12th, according the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Rankings.
