South Dakota State continues a stretch of two consecutive games at home on Friday as the Jackrabbits take on Georgia State. The Jacks and Panthers are slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff inside First Bank & Trust Arena.Â
SDSU and Georgia State square off for the first time on Friday. The game serves as a part of the Cancun Challenge with both squads traveling to Cancun, Mexico, for the event next week. SDSU hosts one of three of the "United States" contests as part of the multi-team event.
The Jackrabbits are coming off a 94-46 victory over NAIA Peru State on Monday in First Bank & Trust Arena. The 94 points were a season high for the Yellow and Blue. The 48-point win was the largest margin of victory for SDSU since an 89-41 victory over Mount Marty in Brookings last November.
South Dakota State continues to get contributions from a variety of players through five games this season. Last time out saw
Trey Buchanan score a career-high 24 points. He made 8 of 11 field goals including a 5-for-7 clip from long range. He was joined in double digits by
Alec Squires and
Damon Wilkinson. Squires scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Wilkinson scored 14 points and had eight rebounds. The center duo each played under 20 minutes.Â
SDSU participates in another multi-team event as Friday's game kicks off the Jackrabbits' showing in the Cancun Challenge. SDSU is 23-17 all-time in MTEs, including a 2-1 record last year in the Cayman Islands Classic. The Jacks have previously taken part in two editions of the Cancun Challenge. In the 2015 Cancun Challenge, SDSU defeated Houston Baptist (92-68) and Cleveland State (77-66) to win the Mayan Division trophy. The 2008 event saw SDSU beat Central Arkansas (72-67), but fall to UCF (66-64).
The Panthers are currently 1-4 overall and in the midst of six-game road stretch. GSU led Arizona State 39-34 at halftime on Monday in Tempe before eventually falling, 75-62. Jelani Hamilton, averaging a team-best 14.7 points per game, was a preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team choice. The Panthers were picked 11th in the preseason poll featuring 14 Sun Belt Conference members.
