South Dakota State returns to the Lone Star State for the second straight week as the Jackrabbits prepare to take part in Tarleton State's Whataburger Invitational. The Jacks are slated to play in five games at the Texans' Softball Complex. Â
SDSU begins its tournament stay by taking on Akron at 12:15 p.m. on Friday in Stephenville. The Jackrabbits are also scheduled to play Houston Christian and Tarleton State once, while they are set to be pitted against Austin Peay twice including in the tournament finale at noon on Sunday. SDSU has previously faced Akron and Austin Peay once apiece. The Jacks have never played Houston Christian. South Dakota State and Tarleton State have recent history. The two foes played four times during the 2023 season, with two meetings coming at the National Invitational Softball Championship. SDSU won all four games.
The Jacks are coming off a 4-0 stay in Commerce at the East Texas A&M Leadoff. SDSU earned run-rule victories against East Texas A&M and Texas Southern. The Yellow and Blue took on Stephen F. Austin two times over a two-day span, earning 9-4 and 6-3 wins over the Lumberjacks.Â
Several Jackrabbits got off to strong starts at the plate. The standout was 2024 Summit League Player of the Year and Preseason Player to Watch selection in
Mia Jarecki. The senior second baseman went 9-for-13 (.692) at the plate as SDSU's leadoff hitter last week. She holds team highs in hits (9) and RBIs (7).Â
Returners, that made their first career starts in the field, included
Emma Christensen and
Alivya Bollen. Christensen started in left field and hit .667 (6-9) while scoring a team-high nine runs. Bollen, who is playing first base, in the outfield and as a designated player, hit .375 and had two home runs. Two other returners are hitting over .300 through four games in
Abby Gentry (.417) and
Alli Boyle (.300).Â
The pitching staff registered a 2.24 ERA at the East Texas A&M Leadoff last week.
Tayler Baker and
Akayla Barnard each started two games and recorded a victory in the circle. Freshmen
Sylvia Shromoff and
Amanda Vacanti each made their collegiate debuts, throwing two innings apiece, as the duo were credited with wins.
Hailey Herman and
Madi Mangulis also worked in relief for the Jackrabbits, with both sporting under 2.00 ERAs and Mangulis picking up her first save as a Jackrabbit.
