IOWA CITY, Iowa — Cody Vertin established a new South Dakota State record in the 200-yard individual medley and several other Jackrabbit men etched their names on the career top-10 charts during competition Thursday at the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships.
A sophomore from Brookings, Vertin posted a school-record time of 1 minute, 47.92 seconds during the evening finals session, which was good for a third-place finish behind Marco Nosack and Nicolas Morton of Denver. Teammate Austin Smith, who previously held the Jackrabbit record at 1:48.06 since 2023, placed fourth with a finals time of 1:49.62.
Two other Jackrabbits who competed in 200 IM consolation final also moved into the program's all-time top 10. Jon Galles, who placed 14th overall, moved into the No. 5 spot on the SDSU charts with a time of 1:52.11, while freshman Hayden Tellier was 15th overall and claimed seventh in program history with a mark of 1:52.33.
SDSU also had four swimmers compete during the evening session in the 500 freestyle and was paced by Sam Johnson's seventh-place showing with a finals time of 4:32.53.
Jack Ellison paced SDSU in the B final as the Jackrabbits claimed three of the top four spots in the opening heat. Ellison's ninth-place time of 4:30.59 during the night session improved on his second-place standing on the Jackrabbit career charts by .15 seconds. Denilson Cyprianos placed 10th in 4:32.81 and Kolden Kringen finished 12th, with his time of 4:33.01 good for sixth in the SDSU career standings.
In the 50 freestyle, senior Charles Sieglaff vaulted into sixth place on the SDSU career list with a time of 20.51 seconds during the evening session to place 10th overall.
Sieglaff shaved another .02 seconds off his previous career best as he led off the Jackrabbits' 200 freestyle relay with a 20.49 split. He would team with Aiden Carstensen, Zavier Kranz and Johnson for a fifth-place time of 1:21.45.
SDSU also picked up a handful of points in 1-meter diving as Seth Berens placed 15th with a score of 227.05 points for six dives and Oscar Francis tallied 204.45 points to finish 16th.
The Jackrabbits moved up two spots in the team standings to fourth place with 167 points. Denver holds a comfortable lead with 428 points, followed by Omaha with 245 points and South Dakota with 204.
Competition continues Friday with preliminary and qualifying heats starting at 10 a.m., followed by event finals at 6 p.m. at the University of Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
