IOWA CITY, Iowa — Freshman Nik Keuser claimed the 100-yard breaststroke title at the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships while also setting a South Dakota State men's record on two occasions Friday at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Keuser first lowered his own record in the 100 breaststroke during the morning prelims, clocking the second-fastest time of the session at 54.66 seconds. He came back during the evening session to shave another .88 seconds off his previous mark and out-touched South Dakota's Jack Berdahl win by .04 seconds with a winning time of 53.74 seconds.
Fellow freshman David Bosch placed sixth overall in 55.10 seconds to move into second place on the all-time charts for the Jackrabbits in the event. Austin Smith finished ninth in 55.46 seconds.
Sophomore Cody Vertin also re-wrote the Jackrabbit record book twice on Friday, doing so en route to a third-place finish in the 400 individual medley. A Brookings native, Vertin first chopped more than two and a half seconds off his previous mark with a time of 3 minutes, 54.43 seconds in the prelims, then trimmed another tenth of a second in the finals for a record time of 3:54.33.
Jack Ellison and Kolden Kringen also competed in the A final of the 400 IM with Ellison placing fourth in 3:57.09 and Kringen taking eighth in 4:01.14. Bryan Wong was 11th overall in 4:04.85.
A third SDSU standard to fall Friday changed hands twice in the span of less than 10 minutes. The 400 medley relay B team of Aiden Carstensen, Bosch, Braxton McGrath and Zavier Kranz first set a new Jackrabbit mark with a time of 3:15.36. Moments later, the A quartet of Denilson Cyprianos, Keuser, Smith and Sam Johnson combined for a runner-up time of 3:15.04 in the final race of the night.
The previous 400 medley relay record was 3:16.05, which was set by Carstensen, Smith, Luke Nichols and Eric Anderson in 2023.
Cyprianos and Johnson also swam in a hotly contested 200 freestyle final in which the top four swimmers were separated by .21 seconds. Denver's Dylan Mes won the event in 1:37.77, edging Cyprianos by .02 seconds, with Johnson placing fourth in 1:37.98. Kranz recorded a 10th-place finish with a time of 1:38.96 in the B final and Jon Galles tied for 12th in 1:40.65.
Johnson had posted the fastest time in the morning prelims at 1:37.94.
Three other Jackrabbits competed in individual B finals Friday night, including Aiden Carstensen, who placed ninth in the 100 backstroke after solidifying his second-place standing on the SDSU career charts with a time of 48.63 seconds.
Charles Sieglaff continued his strong championship performance by placing 12th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.35 seconds and freshman Hayden Tellier collected 16th place in 50.08 seconds. Sieglaff's mark ties him for fifth place in program history, while Tellier tied for the eighth spot in the event with a time of 49.70 seconds in the preliminary round.
The Jackrabbits accumulated 182.5 points on the day to solidify their hold on fourth place in the team standings with a total of 349.5 points. Denver leads the way with 616 points, followed by South Dakota with 497.5 and Omaha at 363.
