South Dakota State faces a challenging tournament field beginning on Thursday as the Jackrabbits participate in Wichita State's Shocker Invitational. SDSU gets its appearance started by facing nationally-ranked Oklahoma State at 2:30 p.m. at the Shockers' Wilkins Stadium.Â
The Jackrabbits will face tough competition in Wichita. SDSU fell to now No. 11/13 Oklahoma State, 5-2, at the Central Arkansas tournament just four days prior to Thursday's meeting. SDSU will take on No. 16/18 Nebraska at 10 a.m. on Friday. The Jacks have won the last three of our games against the Huskers, though Nebraska holds a 3-20 all-time record in the series.Â
SDSU plays a pair of consecutive games on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. against Missouri. The Tigers, which beat the Jacks twice last season and finished eighth in the NCAA's RPI, are receiving votes in national polls. The Jacks follow that game with a 12:30 p.m. game against the host Shockers and close out the tournament on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. versus Wichita State. The Shockers are ranked eighth in DI Softball's most recent Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. SDSU is 1-8 in the all-time series against Wichita State.Â
The Jackrabbits, after opening the season with an undefeated four-game showing at East Texas A&M's tournament, have went 1-8 since. SDSU's lone victory in that span was a 10-9 win versus Austin Peay on Feb. 16. The game featured a combined four Jackrabbit home runs by
Amanda Vacanti,
Brooke Dumont,
Akayla Barnard and
Alli Boyle. Barnard hit a solo home run to tie the game, then Boyle hit a three-run home run with two outs, to boost SDSU to a victory.
Three standouts at the plate recently include
Amanda Vacanti,
Brooke Dumont and
Abby Gentry. All three sport batting averages of .429, .406 and .400, respectively, on the season. Vacanti joined SDSU's lineup regularly during the Jackrabbits' second tournament showing. The freshman outfielder and pitcher has recorded a hit in nine of 10 games as part of the batting order. Gentry has had a stellar last two games at the plate. She's a combined 3-for-6 with a home run, double and four runs scored.Â
Dumont leads the charge with team highs in home runs (4), doubles (6) and RBIs (13). She ranks among the top 100 players in DI softball in doubles, home runs, on-base percentage (.548), and slugging percentage (.969).
SDSU's pitching staff has a combined 5.32 ERA through 79 innings thrown through 13 games. Vacanti has a team-low 2.74 ERA.
Tayler Baker (19.2) and
Madi Mangulis (19) have accounted for SDSU's most innings pitched.Â
