OCALA, Fla. — Three South Dakota State swimmers competed in the B finals of a pair of events Thursday on the opening day of the National Invitational Championship.
Both Cody Vertin and Austin Smith represented the Jackrabbits in the 200-yard individual medley with Vertin placing 11th overall in 1 minute, 48.75 seconds and Smith finishing 20th in a time of 1:51.49.
The school record holder in the 200 IM, Vertin posted the 12th-fastest time in the morning prelims at 1:49.52, while Smith was 1th in the opening round, 1:50.56.
Senior Sam Johnson qualified for the B final in the 500 freestyle. He was 19th in the morning prelims, 4:32.12, but fell off that pace during the evening session to place 20th in 4:39.38. Teammate Denilson Cyprianos also competed in the 500 freestyle, but did not advance after finishing 35th in the prelims with a time of 4:46.39.
Vertin, Smith and Cyprianos also teamed with Zavier Kranz for a 20th-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay, opening the finals session with a time of 1:24.22. In addition, the quartet of Cyprianos, Vertin, Smith and Johnson placed 25th in the 400 medley relay, 3:20.93.
In the women's division, Jenna Currier competed in a pair of events Thursday. The junior from Denison, Iowa, turned in times of 25.06 seconds in the 50 butterfly and 26.16 seconds in the 50 backstroke, but placed outside the top 20 the preliminaries of both events to miss out on qualifying for the finals.
Competition resumes Friday morning at Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training.
