OCALA, Fla. — Cody Vertin placed eighth in the 400-yard individual medley and Sam Johnson recorded an 18th-place finish in the 200 freestyle as a contingent of South Dakota State swimmers competed on Day 2 of the National Invitational Championship.
A sophomore from Brookings, Vertin moved up one spot with a 400 IM finals time of 3 minutes, 56.47 seconds after qualifying ninth during the morning prelims.
Johnson, a senior from Sioux Falls, improved two spots with a finals time of 1:39.87 after claiming the last spot in the B final. He later anchored the Jackrabbits' 800 freestyle relay that placed 14th out of 21 squads. The quartet of Zavier Kranz, Austin Smith, Denilson Cyprianos and Johnson combined for a time of 6:42.48.
Kranz and Cyprianos also competed individually in the 200 freestyle but missed out on the finals after respective finishes of 26th (1:40.82) and 28th (1:42.13) in the prelims.
The NIC concludes Saturday at Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training.
