BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State sends 11 Jackrabbits to College Station, Texas, to compete in the NCAA West First Round, beginning Wednesday afternoon.
Cody Larson and Josh Becker both qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase competition. Larson currently holds the sixth-fastest 3000-meter steeplechase time in the western region and the 12th-best in the nation at 8:30.96. The junior also qualified in the 5000-meter race, but due to scheduling conflicts, Larson will only compete in the steeplechase. Becker managed to qualify for the NCAA Regionals due to a last-minute medical scratch. The senior posted his qualifying time of 8:50.81 at the Cyclone Twilight meet.
Grayson Ring will make his way to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in his collegiate career. The junior stunned in his first year competing at the DI level as he tied the Jackrabbit high jump record of 7-01.00 (2.16m) at the USD Twilight to earn a spot at the NCAA West First Round. Ring's record is currently tied for 17th-best in the region.
Pierre Lear will head back to College Station to compete in the 110-hurdles. The senior qualified after posting a time of 13.57 at the conference championship. Lear's time is currently tied for the 21st-fastest in the region.
Caiden Fredrick, Ethan Fischer and Caymen Gebheim all qualified for the regional round in the discus competition. Fredrick currently holds the Jackrabbit program record with a mark of 187-00 (57.00m), which is the 31st-best mark in the region. Ethan Fischer threw the 36th-best mark at 186-03 (56.78m) to earn a spot at College Station. Cayman Gebheim ended the season on the cusp of qualification with a throw of 183-02 (55.82m), the 49th-best mark in the West Region. The freshman will cap his first collegiate season at College Station, nonetheless, due to scratches in the event.
For the women, Jessica Lutmer and Courtney Stadter will compete in the 10,000-meter race. Lutmer qualified off of her time of 34:00.53, which she clocked at the Stanford Invitational. The senior's time is currently the 46th-best time in the region. Stadter clocked her qualifying time at the Stanford Invitational as well. The freshman posted the 50th-fastest time in the region at 34:12.94. She will reach regionals through scratches in the event, for an outstanding way to cap her first collegiate season.
Brielle Dixon will make her way back to College Station in hopes of rounding out her senior season with a bid to Eugene. The senior earned her spot at the Summit League Championship with a time of 13.44, the 38th-fastest time in the region.
Madison Kizer is the only female field athlete to earn a spot at the NCAA West First Round. Kizer earns her spot with the SDSU program record jump of 5-10.75 (1.80m), which is the 23rd-best jump in the region. This will be the second time the senior competes at College Station.
